B4 Terrace Review — Wednesday, March 20, 1991 Peaks compete in Prince George _ ‘Gymnasts back with ribbons, medals Contributed by Terrace | Peaks Gymnastics Club It was an exciting competition for the Terrace Peaks Gymnas- tics Club at the Prince George 91 Invitational on the weekend of March 8-10. A total field of - about 130 gymnasts participated in the event, with nine com- peting clubs from the cities of Surrey, Richmond, Smithers, Williams Lake, Quesnel, Fort St. John, Terrace, Prince George, and Grande Prairie, Al- berta. The 13 Terrace gymnasts amassed a grand total of 29 event ribbons for place and four all-round medals: In was their third competition of the season. Inthe Division A Midget com- petition (under 10 years), the Peaks entered four girls out of a total field of 15 participants. Shannon Chalupiak, 8, in her _: first meet of the season, walked away with the all-around silver medal, taking Ist on Bars, 4th on Vault, 5th on Floor, and 6th on Beam. Kelly Julseth, 9, placed Sth all-around, with 3rd place rib- bons on both Vault and Bars. Eva Mateus, 9, came in 7th all-around, with a 2nd on Beam and a 4th on Vault. Corisa Berlin, 9, took 8th all- around, coming in 6th on Vault and 7th on Bars. In the Division A Argo com- petition (10 and 11 years), the Peaks entered Felicia Arbuah, 11, who was competing against a total field of 20 gymnasts. Arbuah had an excellent day, taking the Ist place gold medal in the all-around, she took a Ist on both Vault and Bars, 3rd on Floor, and 4th on Beam. In the Division A Tyro com- petition (12 and 13 years), the Peaks entered Leah Graham, 12, who was up against a total field of 15 gymnasts. Graham had a good day, com- ing in 4th all-around on her events, Graham took a 3rd on Nisga’a Chiefs just The Nisga’a Chiefs came close at the B.C. boys high school single ‘A’ basketball champion- ships at Fort St. James on the March 8 weekend. The Aiyansh high school team, ranked ninth in B.C, in final season ratings, wound up third overall on a record of three wins and one loss. Chiefs started off with a lop- sided 96-51 victory over Ron Pettigrew of Dawson Creek. Neil Barton poured in 51 points for Nisga’a. In the quarter-finals they outscored top-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas 98-90. St. Thomas had come into the game with a 26-game unbeaten string. Their downfall came in the semi-final. They faced Barriere and came out on the short end of . an 85-78 score. This put them into the match- up for third and fourth places. It took overtime to do it, but Chiefs came up with a third place 101-98 victory over Chris- tian Fellowship. Meanwhile, Abbotsford Christian nailed down the cham- pionship by ‘edging Barriere 67-75. The Chiefs had two players named to the all-star team — Floyd Stevens was a first star, both Vault and Floor, a 4th on Beam, and a 6th on Bars. In the Provincial B 12-and- over competition, the Peaks’ entered seven gymnasts who competed in their évents against a total field of 25 athletes. Medals were awarded for Tyro (12 and 13) and Open (14 and up) categories in the all-around. There were 14 Tyros and 11 Open gymnasts. Leading the Peaks’ team was Heather Albright, 14, who en- joyed a great day, taking the 2nd place Open silver medal in the all-around. Not only was that the 2nd: highest score in the Open class, it was also the 2nd highest score of all 25 com- petitors. Albright took a 2nd on Beam, 7th on Bars, and an 8th on Vault. . Kirsten Holkstad, 14, took a 3rd on Floor and a 7th on Beam, finishing her all-around with 32.28, Trina Mateus, 13, came away with the Tyro 3rd place bronze medal in the all-around, placing 7th place ribbon on Floor. miss title while Neil Barton got a second team berth. In the 8-team girls’ single ‘A’ ‘at Vancouver, Queen Charlotte City came in last on three losses — 104-27 to Dawson Creek, 67-47 Keremeos, and 58-44 to Salmon Arm. Ansems second in Vancouver 10K race Local masters’ runner Ed An- sems, while on a business trip to Vancouver, entered the 6th An- nual Spring Classic 10 km road- race on Sunday, March 3rd. The race was hosted by the Centi- pedes Running Club, and it was the 3rd race of the Timex/ Asics Road Running Series. Ed placed 2nd overall in the Wrestler Roberts ends with injury Smithers’ wrestler Craig Roberts has ended his college career on a sour note. At the recent NAIA national tournament in Butte, Montana, he made it to the championship match of his 142-lb. division on- ly to default the title when he dislocated his elbow. A three-time finalist at the na- tionals (he won in 1989), Craig ends his Simon Fraser wrestling career in second place on the all- time Clansmen win-loss record with 177 victories, 45 losses and two ties. The all-time champ is Ed Sernoski. Simon Fraser finished the tournament in fourth place with 77.75 points. Northern Montana won with 100.75. Grade 6 hoop tourney ‘A six-team Grade 6 boys bas- ketball tournament is coming up this weekend at Clarence Michiel School. Teams entered are Clarence Michiel Black, Clarence Michiel White, Up- lands, Thornhill, Cassie Hall, and Centennial. Each team plays three games with the first, five matches on Friday starting at 3:30, and the remainder on Saturday beginn- ing at 8:30 a.m. One extra game is included — a mixed contest Saturday at 10:30. It winds up Saturday after- noon at 1:30 with the presenta- tion of ribbons to all teams and a trophy to the most sportsman- like team. masters’ division, beating all but one other masters’ male runner and coming in ahead of all open and masters’ category female runners. Master’s division for men is 40 years and over, while for women it’s 35 and over, Ed’s time of 35:44 was about one minute off his usual early sum- mer 10 km times but he was pleased with it nevertheless be- cause it’s so early in the racing season. The next out-of-town race for Ed is the Vancouver Sun Run in mid-April. This run will likely attract over 16,000 runners and walkers. It will be the largest race Ed has ever entered. Weath- er conditions in Terrace will be favourable. HENDRY NAMED ALL-STAR Some good came out of the re- cent loss by the Simon Fraser University Women’s Clan bas- ketball team at the NAIA cham- plonships in Tennessee. Terrace’s Michelle Hendry won first team all-star honours despite their losing out in the very first game. Michelle’s ex- cellent season, plus 41 points in . the final, led to her award. Stephanie Kuhar, 13, took : a 6th on Beam, and finished with 4 32.05 all-around. In the all-around scores, Jen- nifer Neves, 13, had 30.50; Alina Owens, 13, had 30.14; and Charlotte Jordon, 12, who tied for 6th on Beam, was unable to complete her all-around due to a hand injury. _ The Peaks are very gratified to note that our gymnasts placed in the top three all-around in four out of the five competitions we entered at this Invitational. We are looking forward to even ° better competitions in the future, once we have entered in- to our new facility this summer, . and establish some of the train- ing advantages enjoyed by other clubs in the province. | Skeena boys 14th Skeena junior high school’s record of one win and three losses earned them 14th place out of 16 teams at the B.C. junior boys’ basketball championships at St. Thomas More School in Vancouver last week. The Tsimpsean boys lost their first two games, 76-37 to Maple Drive and 45-33 to Fulton. They then defeated College Heights 63-59 before losing 72-53 to Colquits in their final game. Marine Spiel winners The Lionel Kurkowski rink of Rupert and Rob Brise foursome of annual Marine Men’s bonspiel. _ Smithers were the big winners March 9 weekend at Prince Rupert’s Kurkowski defeated Brise in the grand challenge final. He was also runnerup to Jim Schuman of Vancouver in the ‘B’ event final. Brise beat Don Movold in the final of ‘A’ event. ‘C’ event went to John Heighington of Terrace. He knocked off Joe Salvati.
