Whirlwind tour of - Europe for Hendry _ Michelle Hendry ’ As we told you last week, Ter- race’s 19-year-old basketball star Michelle Hendry backed in- toa place on the Canadian wom- en’s national basketball team rosters when one of the players on the 12-player roster suffered an injury. “Michelle was number 13 in line and was set to head home on the 16th after just missing out on a team position. Then Kim Bertholet suffered a restricting injury, so coach Wayne Hussey practically nailed Michelle while enroute to getting her ticket home, She and her teammates took off for London, England the same day. Then they left for Prague, Czechoslovakia. for the begin- ning of a three-week tour that | included two major tournaments © and several exhibition games. — Hendry, the six-foot, two- ; inch center ‘who starred - ‘for. It’s a hectic schedule lined up for this trip: She had games-at Prague, Czechoslovakia last Thursday and Friday. Then the team played in Prague’s Grande-. . Prix tournament from Saturday — to yesterday. This tourney had national squads from Russia, Bulgaria, Cuba and two local Czech teams. Tomorrow they head for Hungary for one game. Then it’s ‘back to Prague for a game on Friday. They play in Poland Saturday, then back for another game against the Czechs at Prague. On the 29th, ‘they’re off to France to take part in a tourney at Orleans running the 31st to June 4. Teams at France include ~ Hungary, Russia, Spain, France and China. After’an exhibition gaine on the Sth at France, it’s back to Toronto on the 8th and home ta Terrace on the 9th for a well- deserved breather. Triathlon in July - Organizers hope for 100 en- tries for their annual Terrace Rotary’s Skeena Valley Triath- lon. The third straight event is set to go on Sunday, July 16. The race consists of a one- kilometer swim at Lakelse Lake, then a 40-kilometer bicycle ride, finishing with a 10-kilometer . run. Entry categories include men’s and women’s opens, men’s and women’s teams, mixed teams, junior men and junior ladies (15-19), Those under 19 must have parental ap- proval. . There’s first, second and third prizes in each category, plus in- dividual trophy awards to each team member, This year’s grand prize is a certified entry for the ‘Bud Light’ Hawaiian ironman event in October. It includes airfare from B.C. to Hawaii. All entrants get a special T-shirt. A ‘refuel’ is planned at 4 p.m. ’ following the race at the Inn of the West. After this, at 5 p.m., is a beef smorgasbord at the Inn. It costs $35 a person to enter, and the entry deadline is July 2. Ball-Banger entries open Big Bob’s fifth annual Ball- Banger mixed slo-pitch softball tournament is coming up June 10 and 11, and organizers are looking for at least 16 teams.
