In these he has already proved his . ‘ability to conjure up the atmosphere of another time; to grip his young readers by the intensity of his tales; to conjure up a sense of menace from the most ordinary of people and surroundings. - His latest novel, ‘The Throttlepenny Murder’’, has a sensa- tional, a melodramatic subject — the unjust condemning to death of a 13-year-old girl for murder. Yet the law which permitted the hanging of children for murder was not repealed until 1908 in - Britain. . pie ef Jessie Smith works for Ezekiel Dobson, a miserly grocer in a small Derbyshire town. The pleasures of his shop -- "ruby-red hams, faded pillars of old gold cheese’? — are twisted by Jessie’s - misery at the hands of her cruel employer into images of evil and decay. Much as Jessie dreams of being rid of her unkind and _ mean employer, she would never left a finger against anyone. It is all a way of coping with her bitterness and unhappiness. One evening, when Dobson is visiting his wife’s grave, he is | struck by a lump of stone falling from one of the old gargoyles . above the church.’ There are several people in the churchyard at the time ~— Jessie and her boyfriend John, Fanny, who. longs to win John herself, Dr. Ball the vicar, on the lookout for mischievious children, bitter Emma Briddon, and a burly navvy. who has been working on the railway. Dobson is found dead, and the way is open for all kinds of misunderstanding, acts of love, fearful mistakes and mistaken identities. Jessie is taken into custody for murder, and John, eventually, searches for evidence . to save her. The writing is strong, the characters carefully drawn and fully fleshed, the atmosphere of town and jail, the dramatic inter- actions of people and place richly, even brilliantly drawn. There is nothing straightforward about the reactions. John hesitates, almost fatally, from fear and apprehension. Fanny weaves a- tangle out of love for John that almost breaks her heart. Poor Jessie suffers the full rigors of the law. This powerful and ex- citing book is one that any skilled and enthusiastic young adult -reader should not miss. ‘‘The Throttlepenny Murder’’ is pub- lished by Oxford at $19.95.
