Caledonia accreditation F= under external study CaledoniaSenior Secondary School is being visited this week by members of a Depart- ment of Education ac- credidation team. The team is in Terrace to eexamine the stan- dards of the school, compare it with other schools in the province and. make recom- mendations on the curriculum. The provincial team appeared at the school board Mond;ay night to explain the procedure of accredidation. . Each member of the seven-personteam discusses an area with the staff and students of Caledonia, and the team also tries to meeting with ents and other people in the community. After a three to four day period nt discussing aspects of the school, the team leaves to study ‘the results, then returns in January for fromal discussions. A copy of the report is Elaine Perry then sent to the Ministry of Education in Victoria. The team stressed that an external evaluation does not mean the school is inferior, and is instead a normal procedure which every shcool in the provnice undergoes every four or five years. In other business, the board accepted a report which was undertaken two years ago to study special education in Terrace, Kitimat and Smithers. Richard Parker, Supervisor of special education for the district, explained that the report has two major problems, one being the time lapse between the start of the study and receivingthe results, and the other veing ambiguous working of the questions. Because of the wording of the questions, the teachers who responded to the questionaires were kunable to consistantly answer the questions and + Library News The library is making new use of a recently vacated basement room for a combination listening and typing room. Kitimat and Smithers “couldn't find much use” for the report, Park said, and did not distribute it. However, the report was used at international conferenced held in Montrdeal and Saskateon. Trustee Nan Harrison sugges ested the $2,000 spent e report was a waste of money and the board should “file it under experience,” The board voted unanimously to approve an extended field trip for 18 students at the Jack Cook School for the Retarded to go to Disneyland. The youngsters will fly down to California in March and will meet with another group from a similar school, hopefully to arrange ac- commodation. The question of bomb threats in district schools was brought up at the same meeting, but the matter was a journed to committee of the whole to . be discussed in a closed meeting.
