B. C. CITIZENS may not be @ believing what they & see in budget. That's because the province could cut eye exam services provided by the provincial Medical Services Plan. tometrist Dr. Vic Hawes with his examination device. Eye exams on the list of medical plan cuts PEOPLE WITH vision problems could soon be paying a lot more to visit their optomictrist, The B,C, government has sent a letter to the B.C. Association of Optometrists ex- plaining that anything and everything is on the chopping block as budget negotia- lions swing into high gear, One service included in that wide range includes eye examinations, which are cur- tently covered under the B.C. Medical Services Plan. Optometrists association president Joan Henson says it has sent off one letter to Victoria opposing the idea, but she doesn’t expect to hear anything back until just before the budget comes dowa, likely sometime in late March. “It could be possible the government is looking at what has happened in other provinces,’’ she says, “‘B,C., Manitoba and Ontario are the only provinces which still cover the cost of eye exams.” If we had to shell out for the service ourselves, it would likely cost about $60, For each eye exam a doctor carries out, they bill the government for about $44. The B.C, government currently sub- Sidized eye exams to the tune of seven dollars per person. There are about 3,7 million people living in B.C. If the government did cut that subsidy, that would mean a savings of nearly $26 million. There are four optometrists currently practising in Terrace, Ric White’s sentence Sparks petition drive THE TERRACE Women’s Resource Centre is circulating petitions urping B.C,’s Attorney-General to look into the Ric White case, White was sentenced January 23 to two years in jail and three years probation for breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and sexually assaulting her, The offences took place in 1995, Carol Sabo at the women’s centre says it's concerned that all violent offenders, and nol just Ric While, are getting off too casy, She says the women’s centre wants Attomey-General Ujjal Dosanjh to look into why White was only sentenced to two years. It also wants to avoid what is terming lenient sentences for other violent offenders. News reports at the time of White's sentencing indicated he was given the two years so he could be put on proba- tion afler release, A sentence of more than two years wouldn’t have allowed probation to occur. Petitions will be available at various locations around Terrace for several wecks. ‘this spring's provinciat inations from the list of In the photo is op- ith the launch of Glentel's MSAT™ mobile satellite service, North America has entered the age of universal wiretess cammunication.
