PAGE Alo, THE HERALD, Wednesday. October 23, 1974 CPORTS mark hamilton 635-6957 | Cents look g Nad the Terrace Contennials shown the same poise and puck control in the first period as they did in the third period, they and not the Smithers Chiefs might have entered the win- ner's circle al the Terrace Arena last Wed nesday evening. As it were it look the Chiefs ihree minutes and thirty-six seconds of over-lime play to score the winning goal and spoil ihe Cents season home opener Wilh a 6&5 victory. Thal goal, and the goal thal senl the game into over-lime,. both were due inpart {o Terrace Centennial errors. Bub, errors aside the Cenls showed Terrace fans a brandof hockey thal all bul assures (hat the team will be in serious contention for divisional and even league honors. The game was almost penalty . free, as both teams took lo the ice to play hockey.. At one point in the second period, the Cents, Terrace’s favorite perennial comedy act will be back in town early next week for two special ap- pearances. ‘ Thatact of course is the Harlem Clowns basketball team who will play two games in Terrace this year, one Monday night al Skeena Secondary School and a second game Tuesday evening at Caledonia School. At the same time they showed a self- control thal was nol evident in earlier games, They settled down and, in an exciting third period roared inlo the lead and almost won the match. As the game was the season home operer for the Cants, there was an impressive opening ceremony which in- cluded a number of musical selections presented by the Caledonia Senior Secondary School, a ceremonial face-off with Recreation director Cesare ‘Gianna dropping the: puck between (wo youngsters of the Terrace. Minor Hockey League and a presentation of the Canadian and British Columbia flags by Terracefigure skaters, Lauise LeClerc and Leann Donald. Early in the first period, the Cents showed some problems organizing an attack and the Chiefs were quick to capitalize. A tight checking Chiefs team kept on the Cents and, with Norm Neeld:in the penally box for the Cents, finished off a beautiful three way passing play with the first goal of the game. Len Dies finished off the play after he, Joe Zanata and defenseman Del Parker had broken out 3 on 2. TheCenbs, their passes failing toclick and Jacking many good shots on goal did tie the game before the end of the period however ona rather weird goal. Chiefs netminder Dale Neilsen. stopped a puck on the edge of the crease and dropped down to cover up. He wasn't quite quick enough though and Dave Sharpe, playing his first game of the season in a Cen- tennial sweater, lipped the puck into the net. ; In that first period the Cents first line, Gord Cochrane bet- ’ ween Tom McMasters and Rick . Mesiner, showed considerable savvy anda lot of promise. In” the second period they were joined by another line - Sharp, Bavington and Pocza. That line started playing together and raking thar plays work in the second frame. Before the Cents could get started in the second, however, fae ood | Serving Terrace and area Errol Rause s¢t up Len Dies for his second goal of the night. Dies was left alone in front of the Cents net and had little trouble redirecting the pass from Rause past Barry Dubnyk in the Cents net. Rause was, without a doubt, the biggest ihreat the Cents faced Wed- nesday. -. Late in the period the Chiefs picked up back to back minors and left themselves two men short for a minute and thirty- five seconds, Problems the Cents had on earlier powr plays came toa head during their two man advantage and while they controtled the puck for the full time they did nol register a shot on goal. ‘ . Just after the penalties had expired Larry Espe and Rause found themselves in on Dubnyk and one Terrace defenseman after the second rear-guard had stumbled in the neutral! zone. © The two combined to give the Chiefs a 31 lead with Espe doing the scoring honors. Befere the end of the period, the Cents had again narrowed the gap. Graeme Bevington took passesfrom Harvey Pocza and Larry Woods, swept around the Chiefs defense, took . goal tender Dale Neilson out of his goal pads andscored the second Cent marker of the evening. The third period was by far the best twenty minutes of hockey seen in Terrace to date this season. Both teams took to the ice flying and the tempo did not slowdown at any timein Lhe period. It took the Cents only 29 seconds to tie the gama~« Tommy McMasters picked up the puck after an‘off-side face- off, glided over the Smithers line and let loose a hard, low shot, The puck hit the bottom of - Neilson's goal pad and dribbled into the net. , wo, Five minutes later the Chiefs were back into the lead but for the last time in the period.
