Freeman 7 City Clerk City of Port Coquitlam 2272 McAllister Avenue “D4 Port Coquitlam, B.c. APR 13 1982 V3C 2A8 Dear Mr. Freeman: Please consider this letter a brief description of | the Port Moody Historical Society: its past and present activities, and its future objectives. The Port Moody Historical Society was incorporated under the Societies Act in 1969 for the purpose; of collecting and preserving objects, documents and photographs relating to the history of Port Moody and the Surrounding area. Since that time, the Society and its collections have been housed-in various temporary locations around Port Moody. , recog- nizing the need to have a permanent museum building in which to house its collections, the Society began negotiations with the C.P.R. with the aim of acquiring the Port Moody C.P.R. Station, which was being phased out of cperation. In 1978, the Society finally acquired the station, and with the financial assistance of the City of Port Moody, moved the structure from the foot of Queen's Street to its Present site on Murray Street, adjacent to Rocky Point Park. ‘For .the last foux years, the Society has been engaged in the external restoration of the station, and its conversion into a Museum building. This work was budgeted at $150,000; of which $48,000 has come from a Recreation and Fitness Grant (for internal renovations), $15,000 from the B.C. Heritage Trust (for external restoration), and $28,000 from the City of Port Moody (primarily for moving and a new foundation). The remain- ing $59,000 has been raised by the Historical Society from private and corporate donors, and through the contributed labour Of dedicated volunteers. With the completion of the Station Museum in sight, and the Official Opening scheduled for June 26, 1982, the Society is giving more of its attention to the proposed Operation of its new museun. . 1
