There were 216 Criminal Code offences per 1,000 population within the city in 1993 compared to 191 in 1984, The rate for the. rural area has aiso gone up in the same period — from 82 offences per 1 000 to 107. And it’s the same story in Prince Rupert —— from. 198. of- fences per 1,000 population to 227 in 1993 within city limits — and the New Aiyansh detachment area - 90 per thousand to 216, However, ‘the crime rate in Kitimat has declined —- from 90 offences per 1,000 population in 1984 to 82 in 1993, Terrace’s crime rate is enough to place it in the top 20 places Grocery ltem* *Excludes tobacco - and prascriptions within the province for 1993. Prince George clocks in at 229 offences per 1,000 population in 1993 while Quesnel recorded 277 offences and Williams Lake 307, Recreation areas seemed hard hit with Whistler recording 343 offences and Wells 223. The Anihim Lake area in the Cariboo, the area’ surrounding Chilliwack, the area surrounding Courtenay, and Langley city all hid numbeis similar to Terrace. Police officials caution that the figures may not accurately reflect the conduct of the population of any one particular areca. That’s because places like Ter- race, Williams Lake, Quesnel and Frince George are — regional centres drawing many visilors fiom the surrounding area and some criminal activity with them. Criminal code offences don’t include traffic offences or nar- cotics offences. The same statistics also indicate the number of residential break ins per 1,000 population within Terrace’s boundaries has jumped from 7.78 in 1984 to 12.41 in 1993, In the rural area, the number has remained stable at the 12 per 1,000 population mark. In. Kitimat, there were 5.6 residential break ins per 1,000 population in 1984 compared to 45 in 1993, , In Price Rupert, the number of residential break ins per 1,000 population went from 8.35 in 1984 to 13.8.in 1993, And in the New Aiyansh RCMP detachment area, the num- ber of break ins per 1,000 popula- tion was recorded at 8.5 in 1984, rising to 19.5 in 1993. $41” Savings ona 25 Min.
