The most AIDS cases in one year previously. was the 218 cases recorded in 1989. The ‘number dipped slightly to 213 in 1990, as. a result of the widespread use of the drug AZT, which causes a 12- to 16-month delay in the progres- sion of HIV infection to full- blown AIDS. And it’s expected that the number of new. AIDS cases will continue to increase for the next two or three years, and then level off in the last half of the’ decade, says Dr. Michael Rekart, director of the provin- cial government’s Sexually Transmitted Diseases Control Branch. He estimated that there are somewhere between 5,000 and 8,000 AIDS carriers in B.C. “There have been 1,142 cases of AIDS in British Columbia since the first case was reported in January, 1983,’' Rekart said. ‘‘And of this group, 756 are deceased,” ; Of the 1,142 patients with full-blown AIDS, 1,028- are homosexual or bisexual males.
