22 Terrace Review — Wednesday, December 16, 1987 -Multi-talented maintenance hand fea _ After 13 years of continuous maintenance worker Frank Rod- riques has retired. And accor- ding to all counts by fellow workers and supervisors alike, he will be ‘‘sorely missed’’. District 88 maintenance superintendent Lother Heller said Rodriques’ many talents in- cluded welding and plumbing,- and Heller stated that he proved invaluable to the. District's maintenance operations by tak- ing care of all plumbing pro- blems, painting, fabricating - special items, and welding machinery, playground and gymnasium equipment. . **You name it. He could do it,’’ said Heller. ‘“We would just say, ‘Frank, go fix it?,”” . ‘‘He always made a point of telling me how much money he. could save, and I always ap- preciated that. Instead of buying an expensive part he just welded it, or fixed it, or made a new one up. His type of people are very few and far between,’’ he said. Heller recalled the time when the District needed a trailer to transport maintenance equip- ment, and Rodriques told him, “‘Lother, -you’re not going to buy one — I’m going to build’ one.” And according to Heller, the Maintenance Department had a “beautiful big ‘trailer’ that could haut a half ton three days later. — : Heller also remembered that Rodriques’ ingenuity saved: the - day many times. As an example, he told the story of how Rodri- -ques had solved the .problem, of loading and ‘unloading a 1,000-lb. gas-powered electric welder, ; “‘He devised a-frame for it that you just back into and it rolls into the van,” he said. **You just back up, pull a lever, and in it goes. All by itself.” “It’s still working today,’’ Heller added with admiration. Heller also described Rodri- ques as a man who understood how his job fit-into the whole scheme of things, and, as a result, a man whose constant cheerfulness and ‘‘compassion for his fellow man’’ was infec- “ff tious to both staff and students alike. ‘‘Who wants to work on this (job) knowing that any time a sewer backs up he has to go and look at it,’? explained Heller. ‘Sometimes he got a little hot under the collar when kids put toilet paper rolls down the toilets, but he never lost his real . cool.”’ ‘*Because,’’ continued Heller, ‘the loved the kids. And he knew this was all about educating our kids and he had an important part to play in that.’” _ According to maintenance supervisor Neal Nordstrom both Rodriques’ talent and personali- ty will be missed, and now that he has retired major welding jobs will have to be contracted out.
