Roy Greening _No, | don’t think the overpass should be re- designed. It’s alright the way it Is. However, | think Highway 16 should be extended along Kelth Avenue and an overpass erected further west towards Prince Rupert. A bypass could be In- troduced to direct trai- fic around the over- pass and another crossing set up around Kenney Street near the School: Board offices. But | feel that spot may eventually prove to be too close to town as the community will un- doubtediy expand in years to come. You can bypass all the major citles right down to San Diego if you choose to. In Kelowna, B.C. a bridge was built across Okanagan Lake so traffic would move through the down town core and enhance -tourlsm options for merchants but a “bot- tleneck” syndrome has resulted with Increas- ed congestion of traf- fic and the community is now considering building a bypass along the west side of Okanagan Lake to Ver- non. Norman Langley It Is my understand- ing that the Sande Overpass was never in- tended to be used as heavily as it is. Highway 16 was origl- nally to be extended along Keith Avenue, joining with Highway 16 In the vacinity of Frank's Farm thereby taking the heavy traffic off the overpass. The Terrace Review asked: Should the Sande Overpass be redesigned to allow safer traffic flow? Benita Chapdelaine _ [have a lot of mixed feelings on the subject. If the traffic flow was extended along Keith . to Kenney It might cause congestion at Highway 16 due to trains moving through the area. | would like to | see a clover leaf put in place at the vacant lot near the ICBC site with a truckers route install- ed that bypasses the overpass. The problem with that concept, however, Is what will keep other traffic from using the. route and causing congestion? Amarjit Pannun Yes | do, especially considering the recent accident involving a fatality on the bridge. When you drive across the bridge there seems to be a confusing overlap of traffic. Maybe there should be a separate crossing for trucks and commercial vehicles west of the bridge further along Highway 16. | am always apprehensive when meeting loaded logging trucks on the overpass, especially at the corners. “.. alot of , mixed feelings... ” SERS ' Pat Sheichuk Yes, | would rather see the truck drivers going down Kelth Avenue all the way to Kalum Lake Drive before crossing over Highway 16. That would take the truck traffic out of the down town core altogether. | The system would be easier for operators of large motor vehicles as well. My husband is a truck driver and said there are problems associated with nego- tiating ’corners on the overpass as they are not sloped properly. The heavy trucks generally do not need to come into town so It would make more sense for the vehicles to be directed along Keith to the Skeena Forest Products over- pass. Roland Chenard The overpass has been In service all these years and sud- denly we have to con- sider a new study of the facility as a result, It seems, of one acci- dent. # question whether further ex- - amination of the site is necessary. | would like to see the overall design and plan pro- posed for the bridge, along with an outline of how It would affect the community, before making a decision on the subject. . x not. The Riverboat Days flreworks display etched the night sky over Terrace with light on are- cent weekend evening. The explosive tracery of bursting rockets is captured here through a timed exposure. Michael! Kelly photo — Members’ Message by Frank Howard, MLA — Skeena Power has no _ per- -sonality. Sometimes we ignore that truth and visit out concerns about power upon the in- dividual who happens to hold office. Upon a person’s re- tirement we tend to pay attention to the -truth that power has no per- sonality. Perhaps this recognition is summed up in the thought that: if we can't say anything good about a person when they leave office then-.we should say nothing. The abuse which was heaped upon Bill Bennett while he was Premier is now being turned into accolades. He has moved to being a near saint. While sainthood is stretching it a bit, it makes the point. The other side of the coin shows every attempt is made by advertising slogans to give power a good, healthful, charis- matic, personality during an election. At election time the slick sloganeers of the advertising world sell the smile and manipulate us into think- ing that power and per- sonality are inseparable, that they are one and the same thing. They are Witness the advertis- — ing that surrounded the first election of Pierre Trudeau. He was nearly the Messiah. His per- sonality and his lifestyle were exploited to the point that many of our people believed he could do no wrong. How wrong we were. We were taken in by slick adver- tising and manipulation. More recently witness the advertising glitz that surrounded the election of Brian Mulroney. Again we were led to believe that his per- sonality would be our deliverance. How wrong we were. We are going to see more of this kind of slick, manipulative advertising at the provin- cial level. The advertisers will take Mr. Vander Zalm’s sparkling face and ready smile and at- tempt to lead us citizens into believing that that smile will cure. It will not, Remember that power has no personality. To understand what a brilliant smile can do to us, ignore it and look for what is behind the smile. Look for the philosophy, for the essence of the Party which Mr. Vander Zalm leads. That is what counts. Fair treatment wanted ‘Frank Howard, MLA for Skeena, has challenged Socred leader Bill Vander Zalm to clean up the ad- ministration of the Expo Legacy Fund so that com- ~ munities in-the Northwest will get fair treatment. “I believe that we in Skeena are being dis- criminated against insofar as the Expo Legacy Fund is concerned. The City of Terrace applied some months ago for an Expo Fund grant and was advised that Minister Hewitt would be in Terrace to discuss that application. Mayor Talstra has followed up with attempts to get some response but so far has not been successful,’” Howard noted. “The District of Kitimat has likewise been frustrated in its attempts to get a response. Phone calls placed by the District have not been replied to. There has been no formal word nor written com- munication received by the District since Jan. 13. “The Village of Hazelton submitted an application at the end of May and has had nothing but an acknowledgement sinced then. *‘I mention those above to identify the general feel- ing that we are not being treated with a fair and equitable hand,’’ Howard said.
