They're off: with John Nelson of Prince Rupert ieading the pack, more than 40 adult runners
left the Bavarian Inn starting line for the Annual Lakelse Avenue mile on June 1. Nelson, one
of the best marathoners In B.C., won with a time of four minutes, 44 seconds.

Turnout down for
Lakelse mile

The weather was
great, but the turnout
was somewhat smaller
than last year’s entry. In
any case, this year’s an-
nual Lakelse Avenue
Mile foot race was quite
successful, according to
the Skeena Valley Run-
ners Club organizers.

The entry count was
66, with about 15 in the
under-14 category.

Prince Rupert’s John
Nelson Jr. crossed the
finish line with the run’s
best time of four
minutes, 44 seconds. He
was followed by Colin
Parr at 4:48 and Derek

Phillips at 5:02.

The veteran Sue
Walker
women’s side with a time
of 5:30. Val Philpot
came second in 6:06,
then Anita Hauki in
6:20.

The winning team trio
was Parr, Walker and
Dan Fisher. Kerry
Paulis, Mike Hogg and
Rod Philpot teamed up
to place second. In third
spot it was Val Philpot,
Derek Phillips and Janet
Lopez.

brother John’s footsteps
to win individual honors
for the junior section
with a time of 5:19.
David Shepherd was next
at 5:49, and Geoff
McKay third in 5:52.

The Shepherd family
of David, John and
Karen won the junior
team award. Runners-
up were Jared Ewart,
Rick Dahmi and Nor-
man Michaud.

line at the annual Lakelse Avenue mile race. His time was five minutes, 19 seconds.

Saturday seeking berths
on the zone 7 team for
the B.C. Summer Games
at Cranbrook.

Alesia Lloyd-Jones
made it, but Lorraine
Russell came up short of
gaining a spot.

Alesia won the 100

meters, took second in
the high jump and took a
spot on the four-by-four
relay team. She’s the on-
ly Terrace 14 & 15 -year-
old track and field
athlete going to Cran-
brook.

Lorraine competed in

five events — the 100,
200, long jump, shot
putt and high jump. She
failed to place high
enough to earn a trip.
Normally, Terrace
would have several
youngsters seeking
berths at the games.
