There is no need for the provincial. government td impose any new taxes. The raising of taxes, or the imposition of additional taxes, is simply a sneaky way out for a government whith has. mis-managed the finances of the province. This group of ’ fiscal bunglers can straighten out its books by reaching into: your wallet, or your purse, or your bank account. ; Tf there are tax increases‘in the budget It will mean that the newly electéd government is intent on making you pay for its mishandling of your affairs, If there are nd tax increases it will mean that the provincial government Is embarking on a new, and a. welcome, course insofar’ as fiscal matters are concerned. Remember the elogans about a balanced budget? -Ag a matter of fact we have not had a balanced budget under ‘Social Credit for at- least the past- four years. The declarations about balanced budgets were designed for ‘ _ political purposes, not for the realities of day to day living. The myth of a balanced budget was always put in the. . context of ari annual financing. In other words at the end -° of March in each year the fiscal world: stopped and started up againon April 1. On April 1, theoretically, there was nothing in the bank account and nothing in the bills owing’ Section. ‘A new look at the finances of the province needs to _ &ncompass a number of years, not just one at a time. There is all the more reason to do this now that the government tells us we are on the road to economic recovery. ; Which brings. us back to taxes. If indeed economle recovery is here, or on the way, then the .inereased economic activity will generate the income to pay the bills without the need: for any. additional taxes. _ Economie recovery will pay for the heavy (one billion dollars) debt years we should be ableto pay the interest on that debt and. ° retire it as well, If the provincial government raises taxes in the budget it means that it cannot manage the finances of this province « | and we are in for nothing but firiancial misery, Increased taxes will be the offensive way of dealing with your affairs; The government must run the finances of this province in. aomewhat the same way as the average person runs the finances of: the home.. If a family has an extraordinary expenditure and has to Incur debt’ to satisfy that ° expenditure then it cannot simply raise Its income, but has to lle within its means~within its income—tntil the debt is - dealth with.
