By Victor Hayes _ In this column the history . of Newfoundland’s coinage will be looked at a bit fur-— ‘ ther to include ten cent pieces; twenty. cent pieces, twenty-fives and fifty cent pieces. ee As with the one cent and five cent pieces, the. first Newfoundland ten cent pieces were minted in 1865. -The.coin contained .925 fine -silver, was slightly larger | than the five cent coin and. carried. the ‘profile portrait ‘of Queen Victoria on the. obverse -with the legend ‘Victoria D: G: : Reg: - Newfoundland’. The reverse carried the value: expressed as ‘10 | cents’, in two lines above the date. wy ; ‘The coin was not minted | every year. The public need . for the pieces was not great enough to warrant annual production. It was minted twelve times during the 31 years. of Victoria’s reign -. that Newfoundland coins were circulated. The 1870 — ten cent piece is the most _ valuable of .the Victoria. tens.. Succeeded Edward on the ‘British throne in 1910. -- During his reign the coins . ’. were minted three times, in’ ‘, 1912, 1917 and 1919.. The pieces resembled the Ed- -,ward Seventh coins. In 1936 King. George the Sixth ascended the -throne -and in 1938 the first of his ten — cent pieces were minted. . . ~ With this mintage, the size of. the coin. was --slightly. - -, ‘inereased and* the royal. ' portrait was changed: ap- -’ - -propriately. Other than that, « there were no significant . . walterations in the: ten cent. » pieces. _ - Hiddén som King The last minting, of the Newfoundland tens was in 1947, a In Newfoundland, the twenty cent piece was use much more extensively than it had been in the Canadian provinces. The first twenty cent coin was minted in.1865. It was a. silver coin (.925 fine) and was slightly larger than the ten cent pieces. It carried the date and value on the’ reverse with the standard royal portrait on the ob- verse. 7 There was a greater demand for the twenties than for most of the Newfoundland coins and . they were minted more frequently during Victoria’s reign than any other coin. During. Edward . the Seventh’s reign, there. was only minting of twenty cent pieces circulated. That was in 1904. Seventy-five thousand of the coins were minted. They resembled the Victoria twenties with . Edward’s. portrait on the obverse’ and the’ word ‘Newfoundland’ changed to the reverse. In the reign of King George the Fifth the twenties were minted only in 1912... After that year, twenty cent.. pieces were discontinued in favour of 25 cent coins. « . The 25 cent coins were slightly larger than the ra twenties and had: the new value expressed as ‘25. cents’. Otherwise they were: similar to the King George . the Fifth twenty cent pieces. .
