The Wage Conference dele- gates of the International Bro- therhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers and the United Papermakers and Paperworkers have reached an agreement with the em- ployers in seven coast pulp and paper plants. The recom- mended settlement must now be ratified by vote of the membership. Highlight of the new agreement is a five per cent wage increase which will bring the base rate to $2.29 an hour in a one-year con- tract. The value of the ‘‘pack- age” is estimated as between 16-17 cents an hour. An additional five cents an hour is scheduled for “A” and “A+” mechanics. Effective July 1, mechanics’ rates will be as follows: “A” Mechanics $3,29 an hour “B” Mechanics $2.79 an hour “C+” Mechanics $2.63 an hr. “C” Mechanics $2.45 an hour “D” Mechanics $2.34 an hour Special adjustments agreed upon in mechanics’ rates are to given effect before the fore- going rates apply. Mechanics form twenty per cent of the usual plant crew. The night shift differential will be increased by two cents an hour to bring the afternoon shift differential to 12 cents and the graveyard shift differ- ential to fifteen cents an hour. An Apprenticeship Training Program will be written into the agreement with a four- year training period. Loss- time pay and expenses will be furnished jointly by the goy- ernment and the employer during attendance at voca- tional school.
