James, noted ac- tor, director and dramatic “teacher, who died last month. “Pop” James, as he was known to thousands in the theatrical world, was one of the “Seattle Six” who defied the now defunct Canwell “little un- American” committee. At the time of his death he was under a 30 day suspended jail sen- tence. Before 4 p.m. every seat was taken. Soon there was no standing room and the foyer was crowded. Others gathered outside as the simple services began. Sara J ackson sang, and the career of James, described as “a builder rather than a fighter,” was outlined by Jack Kinzel, radio announcer. A re- cording of James in a scene from Peer Gynt was played. On display were photographs of James in scores of the roles he made famous during the more than 20 years the Reper- tory Playhouse was a Seattle institution. The theatre was founded in 1928 by Burton and Florence Bean James who were co-directors. The memorial services were held next door to the theatre which was taken away from its founders and builders. When Be Canwell committee’s smear attacks failed to destroy the faenine the University of Wash- ington used its power of con- demnation to take over the property. This was. a_ blow, friends say, from which James did not recover. the development of poetry Studies In A Dying Culture— Christopher Cauldwell ....@2.00 Further Studies In A Dying Culture — Christopher ‘Cauld- ~ $2.00 Crisis In Physics—Christopher Cauldwell—The best of this writer’s works TO BRING ‘books’ within reach of the average pocket book, a few publishers in the last year thave brought out cheap paper-covered editions.
