Electric wage rates,’’ Effie Jones said this week. “The commission man- ufactured evidence to show that wages had increased by $2,340,000 in the last two years when all along it had the BCE statements from the public hearings showing that the wage bill went up only $70,000 in four years.” Mrs. Jones spoke at a large public protest rally that went unanimously on record in favor of restoring that 12y2-cent fare, firing the PUC and setting up a provincial commission to investigate the advantages of public ownership. Earlier the veteran campaigner against the B.C: Electric led a picket line dutside hearings being held in Vancouver by the PUC, but commission members failed to put in an appear- ance. pee Hearings before the provincial cabinet seemed certain as the public furore over the fare boost continued to mount even after three weeks. All the municipalities concerned, Vancou- ver, North Vancouver, New Westminster and Burnaby, have either decided on formal appeals or are in the process of coming .to a decision. . With public pressure on the Social Credit government increas- ing, Premier W. A. C. Bennett was attempting to placate the op- position with statements that ap- peals would be heard, without committing himself on the firing of the PUC and rescinding of the boost.
