AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 2, 1998 CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag Carpenters Hall (corner of Sparks and Davis) Teacher Member of the R.A,D. for 14 years. Real work, will bring its rewards {| Dear Sir: I’m 36 years old and have been looking - for work. What I have found is that vir- + tually all the jobs available are low-paying and part-time. I want to work, but it’s dis- couraging when even full-time work doesn’t pay enough to cover basic cx- + penses, A lot of people say, ‘Well, at least you have a job.’ That’s true, but is small con- solation if you can’t afford groceries or . rent. No one will explain how a single per- son is supposed to earn minimum wage, - work a 20-hour week and still survive. - You're told it’s your fault for being single. It’s common now for most jobs to offer from $7 to $9 per hour. There’s a glut of _ Skilled workers so employers can pick and choose. However, the old saying, ‘“You pay : for what you get,” also applies to wages. People I have worked with that are low ‘paid often feel unappreciated and, instead of the employer getting their best work, . they get only the minimum. “Why should I work hard if I only get seven bucks an - hour,’’ seems to be the attitude, In some Dear Sir: I'd like to respond to the article ‘‘City ; says Farmers Market Must Move”’ in the : Aug. 26 issue of The Terrace Standard, : The article stated city council turned down pleas this month to give the farmers ; Market a long-term Jease at its present loca- ‘tion on Davis Ave., near George Little * Park, ' The city promised the Farmers Market that we would be notified of any further : discussion on the market's future. Our only ‘ notification was the article in the paper on * Aug. 26, ' The city seems to have complete dis- ; Fegard for the public wishes for public ' property, The George Little Park was given ‘to the city to be used as green space. ' Against the family’s wishes they used the ‘property to house the arena, swimming i pool, tennis covrts, ‘library ‘parking and ‘now, skateboard lot, > All these facilities are important and need fT ‘to be in a central location, but the fact . . s v ¥ . t ry , a real wage ways, who can blame them? The government loves to point to these Jow paying jobs as evidence of job creation. They ignore the fact that these jobs don’t offer a livable income. More and more people living at the poverty level is not a solution. As an ‘“‘older’’ worker, it has also become ebvious that the focus today is on youth. | understand that young people need jobs, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of others, Everyone that is unemployed needs a job — not just people aged 18 to 24. Also, the idea that two low-paying jobs are equiva- lent to one high-paying job is a fallacy, People who earn low wages do not have the same disposable income so the benefit to the economy is not the same. Is it really a surprise ta employers that employees “‘just getting by’? are more like- ly to be dissatisfied and unmotivated? The reality is that people want to work and they take pride in a job well done, But they want a real job that pays a real wage, so‘they can: see that their hard work has value. Peter Randrup, Terrace, B.C. Market wants respect remained that they did not have to purchase any property for these facilities. It is now time for the city to give some property back to the park. The statement was made that it is being under used for its retail value and that it could be used for many purposes if the city were allowed to develop it as part of the park. Councillor Linda Hawes said she would like to see the market used for a more diverse group of people. Either Linda Hawes has not been to the market or she has but needs her eyes checked. There is nothing like a market to appeal to a diverse group of people. We cover all ages, ethnic groups, social and economical classes. , ‘We don’t begrudge the model railway club, or skateboarders or anyone else receiving help from the city. ‘We would just. like the samie respect and co-operation... . - Lynne Christiansen, Skeena Valley Farmers Market, Terrace, B,C, Don’t call it a ‘glitch’ Dear Sir: The term ‘‘glitch in the system,’’ as quoted by Councillor David Hull in a recent ‘story about a lost ambulance is a quaint ‘little phrase thai’s used whenever the sys- tem isn’t working and no one wants to take the responsibility to change it, lost a child due mainly to a ‘‘glitch”’ in the system and lack of. communications. Believe me these words are no comfort. 1 find this phrase appalling, especially when used where human lives are concerned. And I’m sure the Tsares family can’t think much of it, either. I ask you this, if that baby had died, would that have been classified as just a glitch in the system? I hope not. Let's call it what it is — incompetence and being uninformed, I have to wonder, Mr. Hull, if it was you . or yours, would it still be so casually referred to as a glitch in the system? This is not the first such glitch in this area. How many more glitches does it take be- fore it becomes a problem? Rhoda Isaak, Terrace, B.C. \ Fone * The Best Beds. The Best Prices.
