New Canadians urged to take duties seriously "The gift of citizenship is the greatest gift Canada can bestow," Judge Kate Schellenberg of the Court of Canadian Citizenship told a group of people anxiously await- ing that gift at Clarence Michiel school on the afternoon of March 22. Judge Schellenberg was in Ter- race to conduct the first Court of Canadian Citizenship held here for more than two years. Northwest immigrants who wish to be naturalized normally have to go to Smithers for the process. Schellenberg was addressing a group of 15 people from nine countries who were to be sworn into citizenship, along with an audience of more than 100 school children who came to witness the ceremony and welcome the new Canadians. She was firm and un- equivocal in her advocacy of Canadian social diversity, a quality attributable to both the first in- habitants of the land and those who came from around the world as settlers. "We must break down the bar- riers of distrust. We must become accountable in combating in- tolerance," she said. "In Canada we have the challenge of two great culiures, the aboriginal people and the cultural mosaic of the immi- grants. Take some time to learn about another culture — it will enrich our lives. "We must be proud of our diver- sity, and intolerant of intolerance. It is not enough to become Cana- dians, we must work hard at being Canadians." Schellenberg concluded her address by urging the new citizens to register to vote, noting that a provincial election is inevitable within the next few months. After administering the oath, Schellenberg presented each of the 15 new Canadians with their certi- ficate of citizenship, accompanied by Terrace RCMP Cst. Casault in ted serge. They came from Czechoslovakia, England, India, the Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Switzerland, the United States and Vietnam. The children danced, read, sang and presented gifts to the new citizens, and the group retired to the school library for refreshments provided by the Ter- race Multicultural Society.
