PAGE 8 THE HERALD, Thursday, June 30, 1977, Finnish driver on the way up EDMONTON (CP) — Keke Rosburg, talented Finnish driver now living in Germany, hopes a_ strong performance in the third leg of the Canadian challenge auto racing series here this weekend will strengthen his shot at a berth in Formula One competition. Rosburg, 28, a former go- carling champion, said in an interview Wednesday he probably will begin: testing Formula One cars next week—a good showing in the Formula Atlantic test Funday would clinch the opportunity—and might make his debut in the German Grand Prix in about a month. “T will keep racing as long as I'm making progress toward Formula One,” Rosburg said in an interview. ‘That's the aim for all ambitious drivers but I won't be especially disappointed if it doesn't happen right away.” Rosburg was second behind Bobby Rahal of Wheaton, [1]., at Gimli, Man., last week in the second event of the national series, He also stands fifth in total points behind Rahal, Price Cobb of Dallas, Tex., Kevin Cogan of Torrance, Calif., and Gilles Villeneuve of Berthierville, Que. DEBUT SCHEDULED Villeneuve, 1976 Formula Atlantic tour champion, will make his Fermula One debut in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Thorpe was problem to team sayS manager VANCOUVER (CP) — Wide receiver Jim Thorpe was released by Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Western Football Conference in 1973 because his off-field behavior made him a problem for the team, general manager Earl Lunsford of the Bombers testified Tuesday in British Columbia Supreme Court. Lunsford told Mr. Justice David Verchere that he tried several times to trade Thorpe to another team in the Canadian Football League, but was un- successiul. He was testifying in a libel action brought by Thorpe against sports columnist Eric Whitehead of the ‘ 635-6142 ATTRACTIVE NATURAL WOOD IN- TERIOR This 2 storey horne features 2 barTrs on upper fevel, joraé LR. with fireplace, O.R., modern kitchen, large ‘str borm., wedol doset, wr sundeck, lover level has family rm with flraplace, another full blarm., 3rd bdrm and kit. chen, designad as [n-lew sulte. Rosburg and Rahal, 24, both said they are sorry to be racing on the 1.5-mile short track at Speedway rather than on the 2.5-mile international circuit. Race officials made the decision because the shorter, track provide greater visibility or spectators. - Rosburg said most short circuits make passing more difficult, although he has not seen the Speedway track and suggested things might be different here. Rahal, who has competed once on the international track and once on the short circuit here, said the small. track places a premium on avoiding mistakes. “If you have the fastest car, you might get a chance on a long straight to make up for a mistake. On the short tracks, you don’t get the same opportunity.” SEVERAL BUMPS Rosburg drew harsh words from Villeneuve after they bumped several times at Mosport in the Ontario leg of the series, then Rosburg was inyolved at Gimli in a first-lap crunch involving six cars. “T just think that Villeneuve had _ better concentrate on racing, not on talking,’’ Rosburg said, “He has his Formula One chance locked up soit's hard to feel sorry for him.” Lions trim roster VANCOUVER (CP) — British Columbia Lions released ‘two imports and another retired Wednesday as the Western Football Conference team reduced its roster to 42 payers following its third exhibition game.
