As of Saturday, August 2ist, all of our 93 Canada Safeway Stores
throughout British Columbia will have been closed.

It is regrettable that we will be denied the opportunity to serve our
customers, who are the lifeblood of our business: It is also regrettable
that extreme pressures will be placed. on our 4400 retail employees”
and on. the many local companies which supply our Safeway stores. |

It is a most unfortunate dispute—one which we hoped would have
been resolved before we found ourselves with our supply and distri-
bution operations shutdown and our retail stores faced with closure.

: However, we feel that the issues currently under dispute between
Canada Safeway's. Supply & Distribution operations and the 690

_f | members of the Retail. Wholesale and Department. Store Union are
| atthe heart of the very foundation of management's freedom to manage
|| —to run the companies in the best and most efficient way in order to
I ensure a profitable operation with good job security for all and | good |

prospects for future development.

This is not a dispute over. wages. These employees have the best in
the industry in Canada. The Union demands are designed to place
more restrictions on the Companies ability to manage their business
efficiently. Management must accept ultimate responsibility for the
successes and the failures of a company . . . we feel management must
