CITY WAR VETERAN WRITES: Ivan Birchard. who wrote the following article, is a war veteran who now lives in North Vancouver. He was wounded in the fighting in Western Europe. Recently he was on a tour of the Soviet Union and while in Moscow saw the demon- strations marking the end of Wor'd War lI. He urites the following account of the conference of World War II veterans which he attended. By IVAN BIRCHARD Twenty years after V.E, Day, delegates from 23 countries met in Moscow recently to honor the war dead, to view the military might of the Soviet Union, and in the conference which followed that demonstration, to exchange experiences the better to give new momentum to the fight for peace, I was very fortunate to have been a Canadian delegate at- tending this international confer- ence of war veterans and partici- pants in the resistance move- ments in the great anti-fascist struggle that defeated Hitler’s forces and won victory in Europe, It was an exciting and inspiring event which cannot fail toimpress friend or foe: to instil confidence that peace will be won, and to cause more sober thought on the part of those who promote and use war as a means of settling differences, Marshall Timoshenko, chair- man of the Soviet War Veterans Committee, which organized the conference and played host to the delegates, opened the conference with greetings, He expressed the fervent wish that the conference will serve to unite the war veterans and re- sistance fighters in the struggle for peace and a radiant future for all mankind, RR Aa latiele. They met on the stage just after the American delegate had given an excellent account of the situation facing the people of the U.S. As they embraced on the platform they were accorded a standing ovation, In his address the American delegate showed that unlike Hit- ler, who had succeeded (with help from the imperialist nations) in smashing resistance inside Ger- many, the would-be fascists of today have the socialist block, led by the Soviet Union, the struggle of the newly-formed countries now throwing off col- onialism, and the great move- ment for peace existing in all countries and in the U.S, as well, In the days that followed men and women_ whose personal heroism we had’ read of and ad- mired 20 years ago, were present and related their experiences in working to preserve peace, The Soviet people welcome everyone who stands for peace, Wherever we went we were greeted by Soviet citizens who stopped us to offer their thanks for sharing their hopes for peace, SOVIET FILM ‘“‘THE WILL OF AN IRON MAN” Sun.
