Eng., Deputy City Engineer G - DUMPING TO STORM DRAINS MMITTES - MAY 15, 1991 The Environmental Protection Committee dealt with a letter from the City of Port Moody Clerk, Christine Stackhouse alerting us to a dangerous practice which had taken place in their community recently. Some focal carpet cleaning firm had been violating the Waste Management Act by discharging waste cleaning water into storm drains. The letter indicates that.carpet cleaning waste water should be discharged to a sanitary sewer. Committee felt that it was important to bring this item to Council’s attention but to also add that the practice of dumping any materials down a storm drain such as motor oil, antifreeze, detergent, paints, * solvents etc. is a very dangerous practice and extremely harmful to the environment. The Ministry of Environment has initiated a storm drain marking program which provides stencils, paint and information pamphlets in a kit that can be used by community groups to mark storm drains with the phrase "Dump No Waste, Drains to Stream". The City of Port Coquitlam has access to these kits and has in the past six months arranged for their use by some community groups. C.F. (Kip) Gaudry, P. Eng.
