Sunset development plan angers resident TERRACE — Sunset Drive arca residents want council to abandon a plan to help a developer build there. Jack and Susan Peters want a development variance permit from the cily that would allow them to build a house only 11 feet from the street, instead..of the normal 25-foot minimum setback. They are seeking the variance for five lots on the street. The city’s: planning commitiee had recommended approval of the application. But council sent the application back to committee for more study after hearing concerns of resi- dents at last week’s meeting. Opponents claim some of the lots are too small to build on and ‘any attempt to do so will create erosion problems. At the back of the lots is a steep escarpment going. downhill to lots _on Med:ek St. Resident ‘Anne Hill described the lots as. ‘“‘swamp’’ and said they shouldn’t be developed. ‘We don’t feel lots 3, 7 and & should ever be developed,’’ said Hill, “They should be designated green space permanently, so we don’t have to debate these issucs again.” She and other street residents maintain no variance permit should be given. If Peters is to build there at all, they say, he can wrestle with the same construction problems they did, _ “Who's responsible if there are | sliding problems or erosion prob- lems,” Hill demanded. City planning technician Jack Hepplewhite also recommended approval of the permit. '* Without the variance, the developer has al- most no chance of developing the lot,” he said. Local firefighters’ US trip instructive..and peacetul - TERRACE — It was an eye- opener. Fire chief Bob Beckett says his recent trip to Phoenix, ‘Arizona - with Dave’ Jephson and Kelly — _Gilday gave them a look at how a large, advanced, proactive fire de- partment operates. They toured emergency facilities by day, Beckett said, and hit the road at night, riding along with emergency personnel tocalls, This year’s eight-day trip was a "Plans by West Fraser-to log the “tit more relaxed than last year’s, 317,000 hectare valley have been _ however. He said firefighters are also very aware of the potential for dangerous chemicals or fumes at fires. One fire Beckett rode to in- volved an explosion in a paint store, There were five serious injuries, two of which were critical. He said firefighters. had begun to evacuate the neighbourhood afler toxic smoke wafted from the . blaze.
