A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, | December 25, 2002 Civil servant receives medal in honour of Queen's jubilee THE SPARKLING gold medal pinned to Ray Da- niels’ sweater can’t match the twinkle in her eyes or the warmth of her smile. Daniels, a volunteer who visits people in hospi- tal who far from = their home communities, is a tecipient of a special medal commemorating: the Queen’s 50th anniversary on the throne. The Human Resources - Development Canada em- ployee has been awarded. the Queen’s Golden Jubi- lee Medal for her out- standing contribution in service of her community. Daniels, an active vo- lunteer at local feasts ce-- lebrating significant cul- tural milestones such as funerals and namings, is also a friendly face for hospital patients from rural villages who have come to Terrace to receive medical care, Shell visit them and Tead to them. She also brings them items they may need ~ such as a blanket or cloth- ing — using her ‘own money, according to her nomination form. Daniels is especially dedicated to palients re- ‘ceiving “palliative ‘care. For example, she provi- ded transportation for alll outings for a blind terminal patient who suffered a lengthy illness. Daniels is one of four local recipients of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. Three others — Mary Anne Dilley, Aileen Frank and Yvonne Moen — were nominated by people in the community through Skeena MP Andy Burton’s office. Daniels, who is de- scribed as a dedicated ser- “tive who’s worked for ADD RAY Daniels to the list of local people v wha have received the Queen’s Jubliee medal in recog- nition af their service ta the community. Daniels has undertaken to visit people in hospital who are from out of town. She'll read, bring items people may need or just spend the time of day with them. 1985, was nominated for the medal as a federal em- ployee. vice delivery representa- HRDC since January, Local firm ends up buying orphaned SCI wood supply A DEAL has been struck that will see the province sell Buffalo Head Forest Products to Terrace-based Kaos Holdings, forests ministry officials say. Buffalo Head, a former Skeena Cellulose subsidiary, has been in government hands since being left out of the sale of SCI to NWBC Timber and Pulp in the spring. Kaos is owned by Lee Thomson, who also owns Ter- race-based Timber Baron Contracting. The sale is slated ta close Feb. 28, said Steve Willis, a tenures forester at the forests ministry office in Smi- thers. Transferred with the company are full liabilities for silviculture and road deactivation, he said. New owners would be required to carry out around $10 million worth of repfanting, and other silviculture and road deactivation duties aver 10 years, Willis said. Competition, science and enterprise ministry offi- cials, however, denied a sale agreement is in place yet. There have been a series of deadline extensions for the sale of the inactive company and its 315,000 cubic metre a year forest licence. Willis said there will be public mectings in Stewart and with the Gitxsan, Gitanyow and Tahitan to consult over the transfer of the forest licence to the new owners. “We will be startling the public input and First Na- tions consultation process between now and Feb, 28,” he said. The sale was opposed this fall by Stewart-area log- ging contractors who fear their logging rights under ever- preen contracts will be eliminated. Under ministry rules, five per cent of the licence automatically reverts back to the Crown as part of the transfer. However, Wiltls said Kaos will have a chance to pro- pose a job creation plan that could see the take-back wood returned to it. _CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD Tell your mother you love her Dear Sir: You have to ask yourself what are mothers for. We didn’t realize how much our mother meant to us until she went to heaven. Even when I was flat broke, every Christ- mas ] managed to buy a gift for her, Our father taught us that when you've done everything you could for the living, it does not hurt as much when they go to heaven. If it were not for mothers we could not live or love. This Christmas go to your mother and tell her, “I love you.” It doesn’t cost any- thing, yet it is priceless. Only but a moment, but the memory of it will last forever, Richard Benson, Nass Valley, B.C. Alcan is our power partner through the 1950s agreement Dear Sir: ] have to disagree with Helmut Giesbrecht’s recent letter stating that Alcan is an independent power produ- Cer. Alcan absolutely is not independent in its production of power. It is a partner with the people of British Co- lumbia. The company entered into an agreement that flooded 1,200 square kilometres of British Columbia, displaced native peoples, reversed the flaw of a B.C. river, da- maged fisheries and stock forever. Our province lost many things to allow Alcan to build their dam and smelter, The people of British Columbia were to pet in fair ex- change a town of 50,000 people and the wages that go with that development. The power was to be used to make aluminum and a small amount was to be used in the vicinity of the works. That small amount was to power local businesses that Get united Dear Sir: It is about time we ex- plored amalgamation again. We made a big mistake not doing before. We have lost years of valuble time because of a community with lack a of vision, It is a hard pill to swal- low when you read stories of ovtrage about poor water quality and lack of a Sewage services when you have a community that does not want to be part of the future of the region. It is time to deal with the regional issues as one communily. United we stand. Divided we with continue to struggte Peter Weeber Jr, Terrace, B.C, would be ancillary to the giant smelter complex. The Kemano dam and the Kitimat smelter are one project lied together under that agreement, Alcan seems to be trying to separate the two. It was always understood that Kemano power was for the smelier. No one in 1950s would have agreed to give so much to Alcan if in the end power was ta be shipped to the United States. There would be no value to the people of British Co- lumbia. In fact, the profit from power sales today goes directly to Quebec. Today our province is damaged and Quebec gets the benefit. Every time Alean or anyone else says Alcan is an independent power producer you must remind them that without the 1950s agreement Alcan would be buying hydro poser at $34 per megawalt from B.C. Hydro if they wanted to make aluminum at all. Steve Saunders, Kitimat, B.C. The dark menace isn’t in Thornhill Dear Sir: Some one needs to tel! the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce thal theit paranoia with the District of Thornhill is not founded on fact. Thornhill is nol the dark menace that is sucking the economic life out of the town of Terrace. The chamber must look inward to find that dark menace that exists in their own circle of friends. The menace that is now sucking the blood out of Terrace is the “New Skeena” with ils refusal to start opera- tions until its desire to beat up on its - employees is satisfied. This dark menace has stopped $2 million a month for the past 15 months for a total of $30 million worth of wages and ser- vices, and this shows no signs of stopping. The chamber needs lo identi- fy what is caus- ing the bad economy of Terrace and start being vocal about the perpetuators of this tragic affair and quit standing on the bridge throwing stones at Thornhill.
