Laura Wicklund

The progressive forces have
lost another staunch supporter
in the passing of Laura Wicklund
who died suddenly in White Rock
after a long illness,

__ Both she and her husband Ernie
Wicklund of Claydon, Sask, were
the pivotal force upon which
Yadiated the many drives that
took place for bettering the lot
of humanity, Their home, con-
Stantly open, was perhaps in no
Small measure what put a strain
On her tired heart with a lot of
added work and little relaxation,

Homesteading eighty miles
from Gull Lake, Sask., their
Closest point of ‘civilization’ took
days on end to travel with the
Old traditional wagon, in the heat
of summer and the icy snows of
Winter, As if these were not

CP of U.S.A.

Despite the recent ruling by
the Supreme Court of the United
States which in effect has all

' but invalidated the infamous Mc-
Carran Act of 1950, the U.S.
Justice Department shows no
Signs of letting up in its hound-
ing and harassment of the Com-
Munist Party of the U.S.A.

Last week the party was found
“guilty”? of failing to register
itself with the federal govern-
Ment as ‘‘an agent of the Soviet
Union,’? Under the law (passed
during the height of McCarthy-
ite insanity and over the veto of
President Truman) the maximum
Penalty possible was $230,000 in
fines—and that was the exact

en ugh punishment, the dry arid
years. of, the dust bowl also con-
tributed to a baptism of sorrow
and devastation when the Wick-
lunds moved to B.C. There the
family pioneered again by saw-
ing their own_lumber to build
one of the first auto camps on
the King George Highway,. the
‘Timberland’,

These demonstrate the forti-
tude and devotion of real Cana-
dians, the people who built this
country with the wealth it now
boasts; to these pioneers a few
crumbs meted out in the form
of an old age pension,

This community will miss
Laura Wicklund, and mourns the
passing of a grand pioneer,

amount levied by federal Judge
William Jones,

A district court composed of
eight women and four men took
only two and a half hours to
deliberate the 23 counts against
the party before returning a ver-
dict of guilty on each and all
counts,

Gus Hall, leading spokesman
for the party, was present at the
trial and indicated immediately
after the decision was handed
down that it would be appealed,

The appeal will set the stage
for another major test of the con-
stitutionality of this vicious,
thought control legislation.
