Recalling the composition of this convention, where trade union- ists of numerous political faiths, including CCF and LPP mem- "bers, gathered together to work out the big problems of the post- war which affect all labor, such a Resolution was of tremendous importance, Our Party welcomed it as a big step towards achieving that degree of political unity needed to defeat the reaction- ary Hart-Maitland Coalition and assure that in the coming Provincial elections, Labor would appear on the political Stage, united and confident in the big role it must play in the Progressive development of our Province, “In response to a similar reso- lution of Labor unity on the Political field passed by our re- cent Provincial Committee ses- sion, we have had many encour- aging responses from important. trade unions. Unions like the Canadian Seamen’s Union, Boi ermakers’ Local No. 1, Ship- wrights, Joiners and Caulkers Industrial Union; United Fisher- men and Allied Workers Union, Ladner; and the Victoria Labor Council, haye endorsed the ef- forts of the LPP towards labor electoral unity at the polls, This of course does not imply that these or other unions endorse the LPP in toto. but simply that both organizations are in agree- ment on the vital need of labor unity as the only medium through which labor can advance its economic and political inter- ests. i It is to be regretted that to date, the CCF leadership have given no indication that they are prepared to go down the road _ with the LPP and organized la- bor in this highly desirable ob- jective. The Coalition Government of British Columbia, through its Minister of Labor, the Honorable George Pearson, has actively co-operated with Labor in every problem under its jurisdiction during the past four years. This Is The Record: & @ The Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, implemented by this Government, had led all Canada in establishing the right of workers to organize and the right of collective bargaining. @ The Workmen’s Compensation Act, following thorough inquiry by this Government, has been greatly improved by extending the benefits and broadening the application of the Act. The Truck Act, the Statutory Holidays Powers Act, Factories Act, Trade Schools Act, Employment of Children Act, Fire Departments Hours of Labor Act have been enacted or amended in the interests of Workers by the Coalition Government. A special branch of the Department of Labor to promote Safety and Accident Prevention in Industry was created and expanded. The system of apprenticeship has been improved. Minimum wages and hours of work have been carefully supervised. The establishment of a. LABOR-GOVERNMENT COMMITTEE to dis-_ cuss proposed changes*in Labor Laws is unique in the history of Labor- Government relations. Labor has the assurance that the Coalition Government will continue to act in its interests and promote all measures aiding greater employment.
