The murderous attacks, which occurred only six days before the convention started, resulted in an outpouring of emotion and support for Americans. ~_ Donation made to 9-11 victims Delegates to the convention passed a resolution to send $5,000 to the Canadian Labour Congress to assist the AFL-CIO in helping the victims and families suffering from the aftereffects of the September 11 wagedies in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. In a sign of solidarity with the American people, a U.S. flag stood solemnly on the convention podium all week along with the Canadian and I.W.A. flags. In addition, the resolution encouraged all local unions to express solidarity and make donations through the CLC and AFL-CIO administered fund. National president Dave Haggard told delegates said all locals have committed to increasing the amount of money contributed so the union, as a whole, can make a fairly large donation. Haggard said hundreds of union workers were among the victims of the disasters, including firefighters, Service Employees International Union members, members of the International Association of Machinists and others. “T think that on this continent, as has been said continuously throughout this week, the face of our world has changed, like we’ll never get it back to the way we used to live our lives,” said Brother Haggard, who added that the I WA's participation in assisting workers is important.
