= CHILDREN WINNERS IN STRIKE Over the next few weeks the media will play the guessing game of who the winner is in the five-week strike we just went through. It is very evident who the winner is when you take a look at the smiling faces of the teachers and students at a Vancouver school for the mentally retarded. It all started with a phone call to the Regional Office from Richard Earl, Director for the Association for the Mentally Retarded. He was wondering if there would be anyone in the IWA during the strike who had some time on their hands and was handy with saw, hammer and nails. That prompted a phone call to 1-217, Vancouver, who brought it before the Strike Committee. The end result was a group of skilled tradesmen (in the form of Clarence Murray, Plant Chairman at Western Forest Products, Marpole Division; Helmut Tomani; Sam Agire; and Cheri Cuthbert) setting out for the Eastside Children’s Place in the Church of the Nazarene at Windsor and Kingsway in Vancouver. They got Western Forest Products, Weld- wood, and M. & B. to donate the materials and to fix a climbing platform, build shelving, storage space, a changing table and a sandbox. “It?s just great. We tried every route, including the Blue Army, but no luck. We’re so pleased to haveit done after all this time”, said Kathy McLennan, Acting Director at the Eastside Children’s Place. It’s a great example of working together; of putting aside self-interest for a greater purpose — and the companies and our members alike are to be applauded. August 21, 1981 Mr. Robert Mingay Media & PR Director IWA 500 - 1285 West Pender Vancouver, B.C. V6E 4B2 Dear Mr. Mingay: It is a pleasant task indeed to express, on behalf of the Board of Directors and Carell Barton, her staff and clients, our sincere appreciation for the work done by your IWA members at the Eastside Preschool. We are especially grateful to Helmut Tomani, Sam Arquirr, Gerald Cuthbert and Clarence Murray, who have done an excellent job. Please thank them for us. You all have demonstrated, in a most positive and significant fashion, that a spirit of genuine concern and volunteerism js still very much alive in our community. There are so many disabled citizens who need and deserve a helping hand from all of us these days. The “hand” that you and your IWA members have given us will not be forgotten. Thank you again. Yours sincerely, Douglas A. Denholm Executive Director Helmut Tomani, one of three |WA members of Local 1-217 Vancouver, who spent their time during the forest industry strike fixing a climbing platform, shelving units, changing table and sandbox at the Eastside Children’s Place in Vancouver. V5M 4A2 Dear Sir: Please consider this letter to you, and to the B.C. Federation of Labour as a whole, as an apology from Radio CK WX for an Editor- ial Commentary written, and voiced by, our Roy Jacques at 6:53 a.m., May 28th, 1981. Mr. Jacques in his editorial made some references to Adolph Hitler. He then went on to refer to a local labour situation and referred to Mr. Jim Kinnaird, your Execu- tive Director. As General Manager of Radio CKWX, itis my opinion that Mr. Jacques showed a serious and unfortunate lack of professional judgment in his commentary. May I assure you, gentlemen, that Mr. Jacques’ commentary was his work alone, and does not in any way reflect the opinion or feelings of this radio station. We feel, and I am sure you would agree, that editorialists must be given autonomy. But we also feel that they must, in return, exercise good judgment in their work. Mr. Jacques in his May 28th editorial did not exercise such judgment. I have made him aware of our dissatisfaction with the commentary, as well as that of Mr. Kinnaird and yourselves. I am confident Mr. Jacques will be more responsible in the future. On behalf of our station, I also have written a letter of apology to Mr. Kinnaird personally. Additionally, I have also ordered an on-air apology to the Federation and to Mr. Kinnaird. It will be voiced by Jack Lee, our News/ Information Manager, and will be aired at 6:53 a.m. on Thursday, June 18th, 1981, immediately following the Roy Jacques commentary of that morning. A copy of the apology is attached. Radio CKWX wishes to thank the B.C. Federation of Labour for its restraint in this matter, and we trust that our demonstrated concern in this matter will ensure the good relations we have long enjoyed with the B.C. Federation of Labour. Yours very truly, Tom Peacock General Manager Cage That's Brownslip. | call him the magician ...he must bea magician living on the salary we pay him.
