Labor Seamen Backed MONTREAL (CPA) — Both the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and. Brit- ain’s Trade Union Congress have declared their solid support “for striking members of the sea- farers’ International Union who over four months ago walked off eight Canadian National (West Indies) ships to support demands for a 30 per cent wage increase. A short time ago, the company announced that it would transfer the registry of the ships to the flag of Trinidad—a move approved by Canada’s Tory government but labelled “open strikebreaking” by Canadian unionists. The Canadian Labor Congress and the International Transport Workers Federation have also de- clared full support for the strikers. The Trades Union Congress an- nounced that it would withhold personnel from serving on the scab ships. Less than 24 hours later, the 53 million member ICFTU pledged “any international action necessary to resist the transfer.” Should: the TUC-ICFTU action prove effective, the company would have to do one of three things: abandon the service; sell the ships to a foreign owner; or bargain with the SIU. The union originally sought a 30 per cent increase in wages but agreed to pare this to 20 per cent during negotiations. The com- pany, which stood-at a 15 per cent offer, recently raised officers’ sal- aries by this amount. Pierre Paris & Sons Ltd. 51 West Hastings Street Vancouver, B.
