B.C. FEDERATION MERGER CONVENTION

PENSION PLANS MOOTED

OSHAWA (CPA) — The Ontario Foundry Council of the
United Steelworkers plans to seek a national pension program
for Canadian foundry workers. The plan, modelled on the Un-
employment Insurance scheme, would be a contributory one
which would provide pensions at retirement age regardless of
the number of employers for whom the retiring foundryman
had worked.

The message, a cable to ICFTU
headquarters in Brussels for
transmission to the Hungary
workers, said:

“The membership of the Can-
adian Labor Congress has been
deeply shocked by the brutal
disregard by the Soviet of the
most elementary principles of
justice and freedom. The work-
ers of Hungary aroused the ad-
miration of the entire free
world in their efforts to restore
freedom and better conditions
to their historic land; but once
again the cry of workers for
bread has been answered with
Soviet bullets.

“The slaughter of civilians in
Hungary is once again evidence
of the treatment which can be
expected under a communist
dictatorship. Not only are the
peoples of the present satellites
enslaved but those in countries
where the Soviet dictators are
trying to spread their influence
face the danger of similar
treatment. The principles upon
which the United Nations was
founded, and on which rest the
world’s hope for peace, have no
meaning to the communists.

a farce. Both Britain and
France have expressed com-
plete readiness to withdraw

from Egypt upon the interven-
tion of a United Nations police
force. The Soviet has been gig-
nificantly silent on proposals
that it should do likewise in
Hungary.
