New Alibi

MONTREAL (CPA) — A
triple-barrelled reason for not
allowing Catholic workers a
holiday to celebrate an import-
ant Church festival must have
set a record of some sort or
another in labor-management
relations.

The newspaper of the Canadian
and Catholic Confederation of
Labor, Le Travail, recently pub-
lished a letter sent some years
ago to the President of the CCCL
National Federation of Pulp and
Paper Workers by the manager
of the Laurentide paper mill.

All Saints’ Day

The union had requested the
company to grant employees a

holiday on All Saints’ Day to
celebrate the Papal announce-
ment of the dogma of the As-
sumption of Mary, the mother of
Christ,

In the company’s reply reject-
ing this request, the Laurentide
manager noted that the mill was
behind in production and that it
must be kept operating if the
customers were to be kept satis-
fied and their goodwill retained.
“Besides this,” the company of-
ficial noted triumphantly, “one
day’s loss of production would
tend towards more inflation and
also reduce the supply of paper
which is being used to counteract
Communism throughout the
world.”

U.S. Union Membership Increasing

WASHINGTON — Union membership in the U.S. reached a
new high of nearly 18 million at the beginning of 1955, the Bureau
of Labor Statistics announced. AFL-affiliates had 10.9 million mem-
bers, C1O-affiliates, 5.2 million and unaffiliated unions accounted
for 1.8 millions. Nearly 1,000,000 of the affiliated members were
located in Canada but an estimated 1,000,000 more U.S. unionists

ST. LOUIS, MO. (CPA) —
The Southwestern Region of
the International Ladies’ Gar-
ment Workers Union (AFL) is
asking $107,000 in damages
from the Kingsway Hotel here
for cancelling the union’s an-
nual “lecture-dance” because
Negroes were to be among the
invited guests.

Meyer Perlstein, International
Vice-President and Director of
the Southwestern Region of the
union, and Dan Robbins, Manager
of the St. Louis Cloak and Silk
Dress Joint Board, charge that
the hotel entered into a contract
for the rental of two rooms with
full knowledge that the union
membership was a mixed group.

Some weeks later the union
was informed by a hotel execu-
tive that the contract was being
cancelled because “too many of
the guests would be Negroes.”
The union was then unable to
find other suitable facilities and
the annual event, which was to
have been held on October 14,
had to be cancelled.
