B.C. LUMBER WORKER ~* IWA WATCHES ALTA. PROJECT IWA officials, District No. 1, planned more vigor- ous efforts this week to ex- tend their organization drive in Alberta, when the announcement was made that new developments in Northern Alberta were de- signed to employ Indians and half-breeds living in the - area. Any attempt to exploit the na- tive Indians by the payment of sub-standard wages or the use of “indentured Jabor” will be fought strenuously by the orga- nization in District No. 1. The announcement that a con- tract had been signed between the Federal Government, and the Swanson Lumber Co. of Edmon- ton, was accompanied by the statement that jobs would be provided for 200 Indians and half-breeds resident in the dis- trict. As the conditions of his climb were kept in close approximation to those daily faced by high riggers in the logging industry his “show” won tributes for the skill and hardihood of his fellow workers. The twice-a-day climb was pre- sented by the PNE management as a free attraction and was kept completely free from any of the usual commercialization. The ex- planatory “spiel” announcing the climb was given by Danny’s old logging camp buddy, George Campbell, now residing at 2144 St. Andrews St., North Vancou-} ver. Each climb was made an at- tempt for a new record by Dan- ny with the result that his time at the Exhibition was steadily |! reduced until below 23 seconds.
