Poverty Wrecks Homes The suffering unemployment brings to parents and children was described in human terms by Miss Beesie Touzel, execu- tive’ director of the Ontario Welfare Council, in a letter to the Toronto Star following the announcement of special grants by the provincial government to municipalities for unemploy- ment relief. A long-term solution should be worked out by senior govern- nts, as the problem of unem- LADIES STAGE Fifth Annual Banquet of the Ladies Auxiliary of Local 1- 357, IWA, was held May 11th, in the Russell Hotel, New Westminster, with Local Union Officers as guest speakers. Business of the evening was preceded by a turkey dinner dur- ing which the Auxiliary birthday cake was cut by President Mar- garet Seabrook. The guests, Joe Madden, Pre- sident; Rae Eddie, MLA, Record- ing Secretary; Andy Smith, Safe- ty Director; ————— Wyman Trineer, ployment will not vanish with the Snow, she warned. No Income “Regardless of numbers, the problem of unemployment con- cerns men, women and children,” Miss Touzel said. ne “means cold, hunger, fear, anger and defeat.” No income “Many families today are hun- gry. This is not the hunger that we all know on occasion, this is the gnawing pain of never having enough. This is mothers and fath- ers reducing their portion favor of the children, knowing well that their hunger still will not be satisfied. This is babies, in who should he round and rosy and chuckling, who are instead pale, thin and crying constantly from hunger. Cold Houses “Many families are inadequate- ly clothed. Many are living in cold houses, because there is no money for fuel. These people are praying for summer, so that they may once again know warmth. ANNUAL FETE Business Agent; and Lawrence Vandale, Financial Secretary in a few well chosen words paid tribute to the work and spirit of the Auxiliary members. The election of officers fol- lowed. Officers elected were: President, Margaret Seabrook; Nola Jones, Vice-President; Vel- ma Vandale, Financial Secretary; Pearl Smith, Recording Secre- tary; Margurite Gobin, Warden; Margaret Nashnik, Three year Trustee; Mary Brown, Conductor; Sophie Rosen, Social Chairman. Surely it is obvious that condi- tions such as these are ’contribut- ing to the municipality’s hospital bills. There are so many things the unemployed and their families have to fear: Fear of the land- lord, fear of illness, fear of sep- aration, fear of men and their wives of facing each other when desperation sets in and. some way, any way, must be found to solve their problems. “Anger may result from fear. A man who loves his wife and children may strike them because he feels he has failed, And anger is sometimes expressed in crimi- nal acts, a retaliation at the so- ciety which rejects the man with- out a job. Not only adults, but children, too, know this anger, Long, Hard Journey “Financial assistance through an organized program relieves many of these problems for peo- ple, just enough to help them to retain their ability to deal with their difficulties.
