2 Local 1-217 Vancouver Plants Q.K. Swing Shifts Swing shifts have been approved in three Vancouver operations as a result of recent voting conducted by Local 1-217, IWA, it is announced this week by the Local Union officers. By narrow margins, the crews rendered a decision which in each instance places the plan in effect for one year. B.C. LUMBER WORKER Second vote in Lion’s Gate Lumber Co. plant gave a more decisive majority to approve the swinging of shifts every four weeks. Two referendum votés were necessary in the Universal Box plant to determine majority opinion. Canadian White Pine vote also favored swing shifts in a large vote, which revealed an almost even division of opinion Under the rule made ,by the Local Union, only one referen- dum a year can be held on the subject. - Safety Accomplishments Congratulations were extended this week by the Local Union of- ficers to the crew members at Dominion Tar and Chemical Co. Ltd. The plant safety committee reported 375 accident-free days. Also the deserving recipients of congratulations were the em- ployees of L, & K. Lumber Co. for capturing the WCB award in their category. Under the auspices of the Local Union, a series of job safety meetings addressed by the Dis- trict Safety Director John T. At- kinson have ‘been arranged. Al- ready more than 4,000 IWA members have attended these capacity meetings. Recently. an application for certification by the Operating Engineers was applied for at Alberta Lumber Co. The applica- tion was vigorously protested by the Local Union, with the result that the Labour Relations Board has turned down their applica- tion. “Paddy” Selected During the absence of Local Financial Secretary “Stu” Hodg- son, Paddy Neale, Recording Secretary and Plant Chairman, Vancouver Plywood Division, will act as substitute. Lloyd Whalen, Local Union President, recently conducted a showing of work cards at Van- couver Plywood Division on all three shifts. As proof that showing of cards pays, President Whalen reported 83 new mem- bers. ‘April Per Capita reports to the International Office places the] Chairman of the Institute’s plenary sessions. Plans are also under way for the Annual Committee Men and Shop Stewards’ Banquet that is being held in October. The Labour Relations Board has granted certification for the Evans Plywood plant and the International Wood Briquetting Company. More certifications are expected before the end of the summer. Phone 309F Job Organization In reporting to the last regular Local meeting, President Lloyd Whalen stated that meetings have been held in all operations throughout the Local during the past month and that full reports on negotiations have been given by full time officials and mem- bers of the Executive Committee. The Local office has also issued two bulletins to supplement those put out by the District Negotiat- ing Committee. At the same time a full report was given on the Union’s organ- izational drive in Alberta to which the Local Union donated $1,000 in aid of the campaign. Canadian White Pine Plant Chairman Herman Smith of the Canadian White Pine re- ports a number of minor and major grievances settled. Brother Smith, who was recently elected as Plant Chairman at the Pine, reports that the job stewards have been recently reorganized and that semi-monthly shop stew- ards’ meetings are being held on all shifts and that regular month- ly meetings are being held by the Plant Committee and the general membership. Saturday, May 7th, will be a big night for all members of the IWA Curling Club. The second Annual Curling Club Banquet will be held and trophies will be presented to the league winners.
