The increase was noted in all regions excepf the Pacific and was 54,400 more than a year earlier. CCL President Mosher called for government plan- ning and works to cut unemployment and TLC President Jodoin de- seribed the probable inclusion of unemployment on the agenda of the forthcoming Dominion-Provincial conference as “the only bright spot”. UAW: Package Deal WINDSOR — Only seven hours before a strike deadline 700 employees of Motor Produets Corp. accepted a 14 cent package. The UAW Local 195 members will get a four cent pay increase, a six cent pensions payment, increases for skilled workers and a medical plan for employees’ dependents. Divorce Bill Defeated OTTAWA — A Senate bill to widen the grounds for divorce in | all provinees except Quebec and Newfoundland by including grounds | of eruelty, incurable insanity and desertion was defeated. The Bill’s | Sponsor, Sen. W. Asseltine, charged pressure from the government on Liberal Senators was responsible for its defeat. The Manitoba member introduced a resolution in Parliament calling for large-scale economic and social development of Canada by the 100th anniversary of Confederation. Wives Receive Franchise OTTAWA — A Commons committee approved the extension of the franchise to. the wives of servicemen overseas but defeated, by a narrow majority a proposal to extend the vote to government employees and wives serving abroad. Provincial Health Costs TORONTO — Premier Frost stated that the cost of a provincial health plan would be $190 million and would necessitate the imposi- tion of a 3% sales tax in addition to the payment of personal pre- miums. Ruling out the possibility of such a plan in the immediate future, the Ontario Premier stated that no one in the province was deprived of hospital care because of inability to pay. Public Ownership Sought TORONTO — The 200,000-member Ontario Federation of Labor (CCL) called on Premier Frost to press for public ownership and operation of the trans-Canada gas pipeline and the provincial owner- ship of gas distribution. é Crash Probe Opposed OTTAWA — Demands for a public probe of a crash of a TCA Super Constellation at Brampton, Ont. last Dec. Trade Minister Howe. CCFer Stanley Knowles had asked for the probe following the report of an inquiry board.
