Increase In Unemployment

OTTAWA—With the traditional peak unemployment date still
four weeks off, registrations for employment at NES offices across
Canada reached the postwar high of 613,439 at Feb. 17. The increase
was noted in all regions excepf the Pacific and was 54,400 more than
a year earlier. CCL President Mosher called for government plan-
ning and works to cut unemployment and TLC President Jodoin de-
seribed the probable inclusion of unemployment on the agenda of
the forthcoming Dominion-Provincial conference as “the only bright

spot”.
UAW: Package Deal

WINDSOR — Only seven hours before a strike deadline 700
employees of Motor Produets Corp. accepted a 14 cent package. The
UAW Local 195 members will get a four cent pay increase, a six
cent pensions payment, increases for skilled workers and a medical
plan for employees’ dependents.

Divorce Bill Defeated

OTTAWA — A Senate bill to widen the grounds for divorce in |
all provinees except Quebec and Newfoundland by including grounds |
of eruelty, incurable insanity and desertion was defeated. The Bill’s |
Sponsor, Sen. W. Asseltine, charged pressure from the government
on Liberal Senators was responsible for its defeat.

Union Head Expelled

MONTREAL — The United Mine Workers announced expulsion
of Capt. H. N. McMaster head of UMW Mariners’ Division, Dist. 5:
for failing to extend the union’s constitutional rights to members.

OTTAWA — CCF Leader M. J. Coldwell called for the exile of
Chiang Kai Shek from Formosa and the placing of the island under
UN control, in the external affairs debate. He called for a UN super-
vised election and said that while he had no use for a Communist
government he did not want to see Canada dragged into war as a
result of policies pursued by US State Secretary Dulles.

ICFTU Stamp Issued
BRUSSELS — The Austrian Post Office announced that a
special stamp would be issued to commemorate the Fourth World
Congress of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions
meeting in Vienna May 20-28. A number of CCL and TLC repre-
sentatives will attend the meeting of the 55,000,000-member ICFTU.

Canada’s 100th Birthday
OTTAWA — A proposal that Canada’s 100th birthday be cele-
brated with more than fireworks and speeches has been advanced
by Stanley Knowles (CCF Winnipeg North Centre). The Manitoba
member introduced a resolution in Parliament calling for large-scale

economic and social development of Canada by the 100th anniversary
of Confederation.

Wives Receive Franchise
OTTAWA — A Commons committee approved the extension
of the franchise to. the wives of servicemen overseas but defeated,
by a narrow majority a proposal to extend the vote to government
employees and wives serving abroad.

Provincial Health Costs
TORONTO — Premier Frost stated that the cost of a provincial
health plan would be $190 million and would necessitate the imposi-
tion of a 3% sales tax in addition to the payment of personal pre-
miums. Ruling out the possibility of such a plan in the immediate
future, the Ontario Premier stated that no one in the province was
deprived of hospital care because of inability to pay.

Public Ownership Sought

TORONTO — The 200,000-member Ontario Federation of Labor
(CCL) called on Premier Frost to press for public ownership and
operation of the trans-Canada gas pipeline and the provincial owner-
ship of gas distribution. é

Crash Probe Opposed
OTTAWA — Demands for a public probe of a crash of a TCA
Super Constellation at Brampton, Ont. last Dec.
Trade Minister Howe. CCFer Stanley Knowles had asked for the
probe following the report of an inquiry board. Knowles stated that

the pilot had been on duty 61 hours and 37 minutes in four working
days out of six before the crash occurred.

is causing worry to some re-
actionary politicians. As a re-
sult, four states—Pennsylvania,
West Virginia, Indiana and
Texas — have already passed
laws barring trade unions or
union officials from making
contributions to state political
organizations. A move is now
afoot in Wisconsin to introduce
similar legislation, -
House Speaker Mark Catlin,
backed by Republican leaders, re-
cently introduced a measure in the
Wisconsin House to outlaw union
financial support for political par-
ties. Catlin complained that unions
always supported the Democrats

Strike Fund Rejected

CLEVELAND — UAW President Walter Reuther rejected a
suggestion that CIO and AIL union leaders be asked to help build
up a proposed $25 million strike fund to be used in backing demands
for the guaranteed annual wage in the auto industry. Reuther said
the auto union should build up its own strike fund.

India Remains Neutral

NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Nehru of India announced in
a speech at Chandigarh that his country would not take part in any
war resulting from threats and counter-threats on the issue of For-
mosa and nearby islands. India would, he added, concentrate on
making herself economically strong.
