LUMBER WORKER ABU Ei LIMITED Quebec Women Secure Status QUEBEC (CPA) — Quebec women haye now become re- sponsible persons —in a legal sense, that is. The transformation resulted from the unanimous approval by the provincial Legislature of a Bill ‘introduced by Lionel Ross (L. Montreal-Verdun) concerning the legal status of Quebec women. The Bill amends the province's civil law and. provides for equal rights for men and women in suing for divorce on the grounds of adultery, As the law now stands, a married woman may not sue for divorce unless the hus- band keeps a concubine in their home. Legal Consent Another amendment to-the law, that received approval, grants women the right to give legal consent. Under an old principle of French law, that was incor- porated into the province’s civil code, women are classed along » with imbeciles, drunkards, the mentally sick and minors as per- sons incapable of giving legal consent. Divorce Actions Climb OTTAWA — The divorce rate for Canada rose 7% during 1953 with a total of 6.055 decrees granted for a national rate of 41.0 per 100,000 population. This was the second consecutive 7% rate rise. Leading in the marital discord race were British Columbia and Alberta while Newfoundland had both the fewest decrees and the lowest divorce rate of any prov- pects to go home soon. ince. 2 labor always gets a square deal...
