LUMBER WORKER NEWS-HERALD CORRECTED Hodgson Starts Campaign The Editor: Vancouver News-Herald: I viewed with distaste the re- cent attempt at a cartoon pub- lished in The Vancouver Herald under the heading “Revival of the Old Medicine Show.” Personally I can see no humor in Mr. Boothe’s attempted por- trayal of attempting to link the Co-operative Commonwealth Fed- eration and the Canadian Con- gress of Labor and the Labor’ Progressive Party together. Had Mr. Boothe been contented to as- Sociate the Canadian Congress of Labor and the Co-operative Com- monwealth Federation together, possibly no-one would have ob- jected; however, to include the effigy of Tim Buck standing side- by-side with a poor likeness of A. R. Mosher—representing the Canadian Congress of Labor—is just too much for anyone to stomach. The Canadian Congress of Labor makes no apology for their support to the Co-operative Com- monwealth Federation and if you wish to poke fun at the Canadian Congress of Labor for their stand, you are quite at liberty to do so, but when you attempt to intimate any similarity between the Communist party and the Canadian Congress of Labor, you are doing a mis-service to 400,000 in the Dominion of of Labor has done more in a never-ending fight to stem the tide “of communism than any other single group in Canada. Our participation in the World Labor Movement is considered second to none. I suggest by publishing cartoons such as this, will accomplish nothing but dis- gust and resentment by thou- sands of working people who up to this time have subscribed to your publication. S. M. Hodgson, Financial Secretary. WILLIAMS FOLLOWS UP The Editor, Vancouver News-Herald, Vancouver, B.C. Dear Sir: I had quite a chuckle from the recent Jack Boothe cartoon, squeezing another laugh from the well-tested medicine show theme. I am not sure whether Mr. Boothe realizes just how funny the cartoon really was. The idea of linking Tim Buck with the C.C.F. is so ridiculous that it was certainly good for a laugh to all who have the most elementary knowledge of Canadian labour and political affairs. You should receive very strong protests from Mr. Buck. I am sure that you personally are well aware that the opposi- tion of the Communist party to the C.C.F. is much greater than to any other political party. The record shows occasions when Mr. Buck and the Liberal party have played footsie, but I am unaware of any similar relationship be- tween Mr. Buck and the C.C.F. It is also a matter of public record that the interests repre- sented by Mr. Buck have nothing in common with the Canadian Congress of Labour. The actions of the C.C.L, within our own boundaries, and the extent of the support now being given by the PROUDLY DISPLAYING their jackets are players of Local 1-217’s Junior Softball Team. year, under the tutelage of Roy Rose, and Eddy Leopold, had another good year, and made a fine show- ing in their league. 1-217 JUNIOR s SOFTBALL TEAM The boys this C.C.L. to fight Communist tactics in other parts of the world, leave not the slightest doubt about that. If, by any chance, this was not merely a displayof political ig- norance on the part of Mr. Boothe, then one can only assume that it represents a vicious mis- representation of the facts; and I certainly hesitate to think that the News-Herald or the Thomson chain would lend itself to such tactics. Yours sincerely, Jack Williams, Public Relations Director, C.C.L. Season Corporation Admits Error THOMSON NEWSPAPERS 44 King St. West, Toronto, Canada. October 28, 1954. Mr. Jack Williams, ‘The Canadian Congress of Labor, Public Relations Department, 230 Laurier Avenue West, Ottawa 4, Dear Mr. Williams: This acknowledges your letter of October 26, addressed to Mr. S. L. McCabe, with which you en- closed a copy of your good letter to the editor of the Vancouver Herald, We agree with you in that Jack Boothe had Tim Buck miscast in his “Medicine Show” theme car- toon. It is too bad that it was pub- lished because Thomson News- papers do make every effort to be accurate, reasonable and fair. This does not mean, of course, that even then everybody will agree with what we say or do. After all, the human element does enter, into these matters; poor judgment, errors and slip-ups re- gardless of how much we try to guard, against them. The cartoon has heen discussed with Jack Boothe. The first thing he said was that he intended no offence; that he had endeavoured to produce a lighter vein, semi- humourous product. He fully ap- preciated your viewpoint. Thanks for having taken the matter up with us. We are pleas- ed that you felt free to write as you did. Yours very truly, (Sgd.) J. E. Slaight, “Editorial Supervisor.
