International Woodworkers of America, CI0., Local 1-71, 1@ Wost Hastings street, VANCOUVER 4, B.C. be carefully considered by the Board, Dual Role As matters stand the Board is issuing permits with only belated reference to the IWA. The result is that the same Board, which one day is ex- pected to maintain collective bargaining arrangements as the Labor Relations Board, on the very next day, in its capacity as the Board of Industrial Re- lations, acting under authority of another Act, proceeds to destroy the results of collective bargaining and contract ar- rangements established there- “BOARD SCORED” by. Local 1-71, IWA, the Local Union which represents the Coast logging camps, has been con- fronted with what we consider to be serious breaches of the intent of the law. Certainly, the deci- sions of the Board set at naught the Union’s agreement respect- ing hours of work. May I say that the IWA has fought strenuously throughout the years for the recognition of the 40-hour week in the lumber industry. Attempts, now, by any government board, acting in col- lusion with the employers to de- feat our purpose, will rouse our organization to the necessity of From Page 1 taking drastic action to remedy the situation. : 40-hr. Week Threatened In replying to the protest of the Union, the Deputy Minister of Labor is at great pains to justify the statements of the em- ployers and ignore the evidence in possession of the Union. For instance he claims that the decision has been made under pressure of the Union’s members who desire overtime. The record shows clearly, as he well knows, that the men concerned have voted by an overwhelming ma- jority, repeatedly, to maintain 40- hour week. | t f 1 Attention: Mr. F.
