LUMBER WORKER 2nd Issue, Stranded Logger _ Hikes 1200 Miles Callous treatment by Kelley Logging Co., Justkatla Camp, in failing to make any provision for return trans- portation recently, forced Steve Slobodian to hitchhike 1200 miles in order to reach his original hiring point in Vancouver. Investigation made by the offi- cials of Local 1-71, IWA, reveals that he was hired as a second loader, and despatched to Just- katla Camp, Queen’ Charlotte Islands, He worked five days, and was then discharged, on the ground that he was not a com- petent second loader. As he had no money to leave camp, and also because he hoped to secure other work, he remain- ed in camp for another week. His stay, was cut short by the RCMP constable who arrived at the re- quest of the management and took Steve. to Queen Charlotte City, apparently as a vagrant. He was kept in custody for three days. As he was still without funds, he begged a ride on a fish- packer to Prince Rupert, 100 miles distant. From Prince Rup- | ert, he hitch-hiked his way to Vancouver, a further distance of 1100 miles, i The Local Union contends that, under the circumstances, the Company should have accepted responsibility for his return ! transportation. i B.C. Island Unions’ Rally Attacks Labor Act Joint labor rally on Vane ing delegates from TLC and CCL and Railway unions, agreed to launch a vigorous and extended campaign against the unfair restrictions of the Labor Relations Act. The Act was scored on all sides by the trade union repre- sentatives as “dictatorial”, “in- timidating”, “discriminating” and “bad”. Major purpose of the campaign will be to arouse the workers to the threat against their rights contained in the Social Credit legislation. Labor leaders attending the meeting were president of B.C. Federation of Labor Dan Rad- | ford, president of B.C. TUC Jim | Barton and Bob Casey, secretary of the Standard Railway Labor | joint legislative committee. Chairman was Lawrence Jones, president of the Island Local Council CCL. Bob Strachan, MLA, was also present. George Home stated it was not labor officials fault that opposi- tion was coming so late. Last October they had asked Labor Minister Lyle Wicks for’a draft | ouver Island, June 20, includ- of the new bill but had not re- ceived one. until one week before it came down. “Regardless of any outcry |from the labor movement the cabinet said the bill would go through as is, What we have to do now is tell the people what is in this bill,” he asserted. Home charged employers had helped to draft the bill. Both management and labor represen- tatives on the new Labor Rela- tions Board were being nominat- ed by the government. He drew a comparison with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy where even the shop stewards were appointed by the govern- ment. Chairman Jones charged the government with ignorance of government. “They are loosing bills they don’t understand — a monster they don’t know if they can control.” Barton advised support for any organization which ran foul of the act. Bob Strachan blamed individual members of the Legis- lature for letting the bill go through and suggested the trade union movement take a second look at members elected. He also criticized the govern- ment for not understanding trade union history. Threat to Unions Section 23 dealing with agree- ments for more than one year was aimed at trade unions, as- serted Dan Radford as 51 percent of people working at a plant would have to sign for an agree- ment. “It gives employers the opportunity to stop organization of workers,” he alleged. Mr, Casey said sections 28 and 29 set up a “dictatorship under the power of one man.” The sections say a conciliation officer who cannot bring about an agree- ment can make recommendations as though they had been made in a conciliation board report. “These sections are very in- dicative of what we shall have to look for from our government, which has accepted a different meaning of democracy. It is a crazy perversion of the principles for which the trade unions have fought in the past. These two sections are vicious.” Alex Erickson!
