B.C. LUMBER WORKER B.C. LUMBER WORKER WINS PUBLIC INTEREST AWARD Announcement was made last week by the National Safety Council, Chicago, that The B. C. Lum- ber Worker had won the 1952 Public Interest Award, in the field of specialized publications. This award is made annually to publications rendering exceptional service to safety. The nine judges, acting on behalf of the National Safety Council, included prominent American industrialists and newspaper editors. The entry submitted by The B.C. Lumber Worker displayed 48 pages in the 24 issues in 1952, which were devoted exclusively to the cause of safety. Since 1949 these two pages each issue have formed one of the main features of the publication. hb td ate om want The B.°C. Lumber . Worker was the only labor publication on the continent singled out for the 1952 award. The award went to 16 daily and 7 weekly newspapers, 79 radio and TV stations, four radio networks, 8 general circulation and 21 specialized magazines, 19 ad- vertisers, and 13 outdoor and transportation companies. “Publishers, broadcasters, and advertisers are more and more accepting accident pre- vention as one of the great social problems of our time,” said Ned Dearborn, Chicago, President of the Council. “Such acceptance is vital to the suc- cess of the accident prevention movement, because public in- formation media command the channels of mass communica- tion which make it possible to reach and teach the public. “This award program re- veals a growing realization that by protecting the welfare of the individual, we also pro- tect the welfare of the nation.” In acknowledging the award, District Secretary - Treasurer George Mitchell stated, when speaking over the Green Gold radio program, May 14: “I know that every member of the IWA will take pride in this official recognition of our Union’s safety program. It is most gratifying to realize that our contribution to the work of accident prevention in the lum- ber industry has helped to ward off death and crippling accident to many of our fellow workers, “I take this occasion to ex- press appreciation for the faithful efforts of the .many IWA members who have cru- saded for the ideals of safety in season and out of season, to accomplish the important results now officially recorded. “I know they feel as I do, that although important pro- Bress has been made, we will not rest until needless acci- dents are completely eliminat- ed from our daily working ex- perience, I alsq wish fo ex- press appreciation of the faith- ful services’ rendered by the District Safety Council and Safety Director, John T.
