Housewife

By HELEN BAILEY

She’s not very tall but her reach in community activities is as

long as Paul Bunyan’s arm.

She’s a housewife and grandmother and ‘can bake a chocolate

cake.

“She's an expert in labor relations problems.
She's Marjorie Cooper of Regina, only woman elected to the
Saskatchewan Legislature in the June 11 election there. Of course

she’s CCF.

When a woman candidate polls i
23,961 votes on her first try, 8000 |
more than her nearest opponent,
she must be pretty special. Mar-
jorie Cooper’s friends agree that
Saskatchewan couldn’t have a
better representative of the fair
sex in the Legislature to follow
in the footsteps of Mrs. Beatrice
Trew, the first woman member
who sat on the CCF side from
1944 to 1948. But both they and
Mrs. Cooper wish that there was
more than one woman member
this time.

“After all,” says Mrs. Cooper,
“women are 50 percent of the
population, and democracy can’t
possibly function at its best with
no legislative representation for
half our population. Canada is
far behind other countries in the

most of her life. She taught in
rural Saskatchewan’ schools and
in Regina before her marriage to
a fellow teacher whom she had
met at Normal School.

Already Mrs. Cooper is look-
ing forward to work in the Legis-
lature. While she does not be-
lieve in appealing to the elec-
torate: simply as a woman, she
thinks-that women as consumers
have a special point of view to
present in the House. They are
particularly concerned with
everything that affects the home
and children. “Health, Welfare
and above all, housing will be
my special interests,” she sa:

number of women in our legisla~
tures. It is time we caught up.”
Mrs. Cooper’s bubbling sense
of humor helped her through a
strenuous campaign in Regina.
Funniest incident she recalls was |”
receiving in the mail a book en-| prey mi py

titled “Bobbed Hair, Bossy Wives
and Women Preachers” which

was full of Biblical quotations

such: as “Suffer not a woman to
teach nor to usurp authority over
the man but to sit in silence.”
Saddest incident in the cam-
paign was to be stricken with
laryngitis and unable to make
speeches for a week. “However,”
quips Mrs. Cooper, “my friends
say that’s why I was elected.”
Mrs. Cooper is a native West-
erner, having lived in Regina
