I- had “worked there for several months. Two of our best customers were Negroes. I liked these people. I didn’t just toldrate them. Then the manager called me aside one night and told me.to “make them wait”. “Give them the worst possible service,” he said. I quit. EDITORIAL (Continued) can’t afford them. The lumber workers nave been reading | the financial statements of the large companies, and have ia fairly accurate idea of the enormous profits that you "have been accumulating. Your surplus profits have been so large that you know, just as the lumber workers know, the time has come for a more equitable distribution of income derived from our forest wealth. You should remember that lumber gant are not easily frightened, so don’t try to scare them away from their demands by any bluff that the industry must slow down because of over-production. Just a few days ago you were putting the pressure on for overtime because you claimed that higher production was urgently required to meet the market demands. This situation hasn’t changed overnight. The demand in the American market has, remained fairly constant, and only a few days ago you had to have an extension of time to meet the back-log of U.K. orders. Some of you have been so anxious to keep your mills working at capacity that you wouldn’t even consider an annual shut-down in order to give your employees their annual vacations at once. Don’t treat the IWA negotiators as though they were morons. They can read just as well as you can. They have been reading the market reports and financial state- ments and have made their own logical deductions. You might as well recognize that the [WA means busi- ness about the betterment of conditions for the lumber workers. If they find you lacking in any sense of responsi- bility for the welfare of the workers who have built up your wealth, they can get just as tough as you can.
