Roy Moore played the part of Santa Claus with skill and aplomb. Program included the presenta- tion of a film depicting the toy- land parade, delightful Christmas carols rendered by the 21 lady members of the Schubert Singers and the rollicking orchestral and vocal numbers of the Fraser River Boys. Portions of the pro- gram were recorded for re-broad- cast over CKNW. A pleasing feature of the pro- gram was the appearance of ta- Iented youngsters who hadj pre- viously made their debut on the Amateur Night performances sponsored by the Local Union at the Academy Theatre, Malaird- ville. Officials and members of the IWA in New Westminster ex- pressed themselves as well pleased with the arrangements for the party, and the warm ap- preciation shown by IWA fami- lies. This was the opinion expressed by Dis- trict Secretary-Treasurer Geo. Mitchell on return from an ex- tensive tour, during which he discussed this year’s contract settlement with numerous groups. A long, list of grievances was discussed with the crew at Boun- dary Sawmills, Midway. Organi- zation in this plant was found to be making excellent progress, both in numbers and IWA ac- tivity. Vigilant ‘policing of the contract has won the allegiance of the majority of the crew mem- bers. f Stooge Outwitted The efforts of a company “stooge” among the employees of Interior Pole Co., Lumby, failed dismally, when his false state- ments were finally exposed by IWA representatives. He had at- tempted to persuade the crew to organize into a company union in order to secure the “generous” wage offer of the employer. When the IWA settlement was announced, he was a very red- faced individual, with his fellow- crew members determined that he should be dealt with by the Union in a fitting manner. _ Nicola Valley At the Nicola Valley Sawmills, the visiting IWA officials found occasion to congratulate Secre- tary Albert Rowbottom and his committee members for a job well done. They were informed that more new members had been signed up since announcement of the settlement than ever before, and that the IWA was in the strongest position of its history in the valley. Secretary Mitchell reported that meetings held throughout the Interior were all well attend- ed and that everywhere lumber workers expressed confidence in the IWA and satisfaction with the manner in which negotiations had been conducted this year. As the story goes, the repre- sentative of the Progressive- , Conservatives undertook to un- leash his best political yocabu- lary in denunciation of the sins of the Liberal party, both at Ottawa and Victoria. He suddenly remembered the Coalition with the Liberals at Victoria, whereupon he struck. an attitude and declaimed, “Of course we sleep in the same bed with them at Victoria, but we're not married to them.” The ribald wisecracks that were heard throughout the audience are not a matter of public record, LEE BROS.
