Mitchell Reports The UNION’S BUSINESS District Convention Nears "THIS week the official call will be issued for the 15th Annual District Convention of B.C. District No. 1, International Woodworkers of America, CIO-CCL, to be held in the Hotel Van- couver, January 29 - February 1, 1952. All IWA Local Unions in the province will be asked to select their delegates and prepare their resolutions for consideration of the convention. Each year. it is customary to say, when issuing the call, that the convention is important. The fact is that this statement is, always true. Ina Union, consti- tuted as the IWA, and which re- lies on the democratic proced- ures, District Convention is the | governing body - for the Union in [ Jil. this province. It is the means by | i ue the pe t the membership {| ‘ determines the eo} broad outlines of _ Re the District poli- - cies and program for the year. Each year it is customary to say that the ap- proaching convention is more im- portant than any held before. This statement is likewise as true today as when made before. As the IWA grows in strength and influence, so its problems intens- ee ify, and so the greater the com- bined intelligence required to cope with its problems. Events Crowd IWA members will readily agree that the 1952 convention will face vital issues. The events in which our Union is now tak- ing part make this apparent. The pressure of international strains upon the Canadian econ- omy is working changes which confront organized labor with new and perplexing questions. Foremost is the choice which la- bor must make between demo- cratic. and totalitarian develop- ments, If we must arm to defend democrdey, we must make cer- tain that the burden of rearma- ment does not crush democracy, either in our own or allied coun- tries. : Labor must throw its influence in support of economic aid to those countries where poverty opens the door to Communism. The members of our Union must hammer out sound policies dealing with the extension of our Union’s organization, increased efficiency in the Union’s admini- stration, the development of an educational program, the promo- tion of safety standards in the industry. At all times we must safe- guard and advance the standards of wages and working conditions for those who rely for this pur- pose upon the IWA. Preparation Essential The importance of these ques- tions demands the best possible preparation on the part of the membership. Not only is it important to select competent and reliable delegates. It is equally important that they should have the oppor- tunity between now and the con- vention to profit by the consider- ed discussion of these questions within the membership of the Local Unions. It is this kind of preparation that assures the success of a democratic convention.
