NAVY SAILS FOR

Sailing of the Loggers Navy last week marked the begin-
ning of an intensive organization drive by Local 1-71 to recover
from the effects of the long shut-down for dry weather condi-
tions, On board, in addition to the regular crew was Financial
Secretary Fred Fieber, and Organizer Don Campbell.

The disruption by the shut-down in the Union’s organiza-:
tion activity will, it is anticipated, require complete re-organiza-
tion of many camp committees, due to changing personnel.

LOGGERS NAVY heads out on IWA organization cruise upon resumption of logging operations
after the shut-down. The crew of the IWA cruiser conducts their organization work under circum-
stances unique in trade union experience, as their craft is the main link between the Union and re-
mote logging camps on the B.C. Coast. The Loggers Navy, appearing this year in IWA green and
gold colors, has 40’ length and 11’ beam, and is powered with a 52-h.p. Gardner Diesel, capable of
8 knots. Skipper is Ozzie Mattila, and crew member and organizer is “Scotty” Draper.

Loggers Recover Plane Flares

Redress was recently obtain-
ed by the officers of Local 1-71
for 15 loggers who were flown
to Pioneer Logging Co. camp
only to find that the camp was
shut down. Their plane flight
left Vancouver on August 21,
although the camp had closed
August 20th. When the loggers
requested their fare back they
were at first refused.

On return to Vancouver the
grievance was reported to the
Local Union office and immediate

OTTAWA (CPA)—The official
announcement that the Canadian
cost-of-living index has gone" up
another 1.3 points during July to
reach a new high of 188.9
brought the following statement
from M, J. Coldwell, M.P., CCF
National Leader:

“Another sharp increase in the
cost of living makes immediate
action by the government impera-
tive. On October 18, 1941, Mr.
MacKenzie King said:

“The truth is that all but an
insignificant minority of the
population would be worse off as
a result of rising prices.’

“That was prophetic and it is
truer today. Prices in Canada ap-
pall European visitors who state
that they appear higher than
prices of similar commodities in
the United States.

Subsidies Needed

“We need subsidies to compen-
sate farmers for rising costs of
production and to lower essential
food prices. Except in Saskatche-
wan, where rent control has been
maintained, tenants, have been
notified of sharp increases in
rents effective October 1. When
these are taken into consideration
at the end of December, and fail-
ing action by the government
now, it is probable that the cost
of living will reach the unprece-

dented index figure of 200,
