CONVENTION SUPPLEMENT

200 ‘Resolves’
On Agenda |

Two hundred resolutions on
a wide range of topics present
a formidable task for the dele-
gates of the Annual District
Convention in Victoria this
week. Preliminary screening
and consolidation will be under-
taken by a resolutions commit-
te under the chairmanship of
Rae Eddie, Local 1-357.

Wages and working conditions
have stirred IWA members in
the Local Unions to present an
avalanche of proposals for im-
provement. Such matters as
“portal to portal pay”, guaran-
teed daily rates for contract
workers, hours of work, health
and welfare plans, paid statutory
holidays, etc., will be given a
thorough airing.

Interior delegates will demand
earlier negotiations and the pro-
hibition of interim agreements as
the result of their painful experi-
ence with agreement-shy oper-
ators during the past season.

Members of the Coast Loggers’
Local have declared for organic
unity between the chief labor
congresses of the Dominion, and
pledge themselves to support the
political action program of the
Canadian Congress of Labor.

A number of resolutions desire
that the District organization of
the IWA should demand price
control, and the deferment of any
wage freeze until wage ddjust-
ments have been secured.

Resolutions ‘dealing with the
problems of accident prevention
bear witness to the intense in-
terest throughout the IWA in the
safety program of- the Union.
These resolutions will be supple-
mented during the convention by |
the recommendations of the Dis-
trict Safety Conference, which
meets: one day in advance of the
convention.

An increase in union dues has
been suggested in several quar-
ters, but is opposed in other
Local Unions who prefer the
special assessment method to
get funds as required for special
purposes,

Other resolutions indicate that
the IWA has not lost interest in
such matters as housing, health
services, and old age pensions.
Evidently the intention is to give
vigorous support to the B.C.
Federation of, Labor and the
Canadian Congress of Labor in
crusading for genuine social
security.
