Expert Watch Repairing SMEAR CAMPAIGN RECENT publication of a syndicated series of anti-union articles by an Vancouver daily can only be regarded as an attempt to destroy all confidence in trade unionism generally. Clearly these articles have been inspired by interests intent upon the destruction of the trade unions. It would be most surprising, if in the organization of fifteen million workers on this continent during the last half century, nothing had occurred which deserved criticism. : On the other hand the articles make no attempt to assess the meritorious achievements of the trade unions which far out-weigh the mistakes of some. No reference is made to the greed and ruthlessness of employers, which compelled the workers to organize in protection of their living standards. ‘Vancouver trade unionists have not failed to note that the text of the articles in question does not justify the “scare heads.” Mainly adverse criticism of the trade unions is innuendo or opinions gleaned from the spokes- men of employing interests. The IWA has not been specifically mentioned as yet. But the International President of the IWA is a member of the CIO Executive Board, whose President, Phillip Murray, has been slandered. President Murray holds office by virtue of the confi- dence in him expressed by the vote of free trade unionists. It is absurd in the extreme to suggest that a man of his calibre and proven loyalty to the interests of the workers should require the methods attributed to him. The author of the articles and the sponsoring publica- tion in Vancouver completely overlook one vital point. The trade union movement is now an accepted and essential institution of our democracy. Those who prate about the virtues of democracy would be well advised to help organized labor serve the purposes of democracy rather than smear and hamper a legitimate expression of freedom of association. If you wish to quit before the OTTAWA — (CPA — Sas- katchewan’s Department of Labor has announced plans for a new pre - employment training program in certain technical trades, which will begin shortly to alleviate the shortage of skill- ed tradesmen. The program will cover six technical trades: electricity, car- pentry, motor vehicle repair, sheet metal work, auto body re- pair and welding. The classes will be held in technical schools in Regina and Saskatoon. This training is offered to per- sons who will later become ap- prenticed to private employers, either of their own choice, or found for them by the Labor Department. Co-operating with the department in this pre- apprenticeship training program are employers and tradesmen in Saskatchewan as well as techni- cal school authorities. ‘The train- ing is thus specifically designed to prepare the trainee for the kind of work that will be expect- ed of him by employers in Sas- katehewan. é If the trainee makes rapid progress, he will be given the opportunity to sign an appren- ticeship contract before the end of his training program. Time eredits will be allowed on the- apprenticeship period of the time the trainee spent in pre-employ- ment training. Training may be terminated if the candidate fails to make satisfactory progress.
