Instances where companies haye by-passed the Union to persuade individual workers to work overtime have been exposed. In one instance, this violation of the agreement was brought to the attention of the District Office, to consider representa- tions to the employers’ bargain- ing agency. : The Local Union requests members who become aware of this practice to inform the plant committee or the Local Union office. Strict adherence to the Dis- trict Policy of a 40-hour week will be maintained, with excep- tion only in the event of an offi- cially recognized emergency. Bestwood Shingle Grievance Complaint has been lodged by the Local Union with the man- agement of Bestwood Shingle Co. Ltd., Port Moody, regarding the practice of demanding that split- ters and knee-bolters point up their saws on their own time. This is regarded as a distinct violation of the regulations of the Industrial Relations Board. made and’ the grievance pressed. UIC Claim An unusual claim was placed before the Board of Referees of the Unemployment Insurance Commission by the Local Union recently to prevent disqualifica- tion of a part-time worker during the vacation period. The claimant who worked only three days a week, and drew benefits for two days, was de- prived of any insurance payments during the plant vacation.
