Policy Committee present us as trade unionists with a number of important questions, which we must be prepared to answer. The Questions The operators’ propaganda, in its attempt to influence the pub- lic, raises the following issues: 1. Why a wage increase? - 2. Why the demand for the Union shop, and what is involved? 8. What economic benefits have we derived from past wage increases? 4, Can we maintain wages in the right relation to living costs? Why A Wage Increase? The reasons for a wage in- crease are obvious. Our last wage revision was two years ago. The cost of living, unlike wage rates, has not been static. It has risen to the point where “real wages” in terms of food, clothing, and shelter are insufficient to make ends meet. Our Union is powerless to do anything in the field of living costs and has no alternative but to utilize the only avenue left open, namely, to a wage increase equivalent to the increase in the cost of living. Furthermore, while our wages have remained stationary, the prices of lumber have risen stead- ily, and show no sign of having reached the peak. The declared dividends or profits of the major lumber manufacturers are also indicative that they could pay the wage increase demands, and still keep out of the poorhouse. Why the Union Shop? We have, in our industry, a minority who for purely selfish reasons, will not accept their re- T’Sable River Logging Co. Ltd. Fanny Bay. Totem Shingle Co, Ltd., Fanny Bay. Your Space, Boys if sponsibilities as workers and join the Union. Note this well, there is no rec- ord of any of these “individu: ists” ever refusing a wage in- crease or improvement in work- ing conditions. In other words, “they reap what others have sown and tilled”. The Union shop is expressly for the purpose of making certain that the minority which reaps the benefits of the trade union strug- gle, should accept some of the re- sponsibilities which make these benefits possible. The medical and legal profes- sions provide clear examples of the tightest form of “closed shop” yet known, and the ques- tion of democracy in their cases has never been raised. The Union shop in our contract would be given effect on the basis of “the majority rules’. There is no longer any doubt. but that the majority of the lumber workers want the Union shop. The employer cannot claim that the Union shop is undemocratie. He will still have the right to hire whom he pleases and fire for just cause. Economic Benefits Our past wage hikes have done no more than partially keep pace with constantly rising living costs. Admittedly, they have been incapable of satisfying our needs on a permanent basis. It is the writer’s firm convic- tion that the ultimate solution to our problem will not be found until we arrive at the answer to our last question. The answer lies in part, in unionized labor utilizing the same methods that industry in general has used with signal success to protect their interests—political action.
